WTF!? UNFRICKENBELIEVABLE!

So friday one of my WD 120gb SATA drives starts acting up - i have 2 of them configured as raid0.
I was getting clicks, hangs, and crashes every 20 minutes or so.
I spent all friday night and saturday backing up about 150gb worth of stuff onto DVD and external hard drives.

I spent all day sunday getting the computer fixed, and all afternoon and evening on monday getting the computer ready to run again (installing software, restoring back ups, etc)

So yesterday everything was great - i was running off of one 120gb WD SATA drive, and had a dead one lying there.

I wake up at 2am to *CLICK**CLICK*CLICK*CLICK* coming from the computer.
I get up and check it - DISK BOOT FAILURE.
I restarted...same thing.
I checked it again before i came to work...same thing, no workie.

I bought these drives at the exact same times.
BOTH fricken warranties expired in SEPTEMBER 2004.
BOTH drives die within 3 days of eachother.

What the crap kind of horseshit is this??
Seems like they were designed to die 1 month after warranty expiration.

No more western digital for me.

</rant>

There's no clock in the drives so they don't know when to expire. That said, the manuf. lowered the 3yr to 1yr for a reason. I'm not sure who still offers 3yr warranties. I'm not very fond of WD anymore though, they seem (to me) to be more problematic than other brands, but, then again, there are probably folks here who will claim having no problems.

That still sucks but perhaps you are having heat problems or power supply problems , maybe capacitors going on the motherboard, etc, that are contributing to the drive failures? But, that would get into technical support which would be moved to another forum.

Lastly, since it is so close to warranty and both drives failed you may want to contact them and see if they'll replace them anyway. If not, write them a letter, etc.

funny ive got WD 2 and 5gs still that have been working non stop for over 4 years =P

btw WRONG FORUM!

they've obviously changed their ways
their stuff isn't made the same way it was 10 years ago - kudos on keeping your pII200mhz running though

and wrong forum my ass, i'm not asking for any tech help
i'm bitching about a POS brand hard drive

I had a maxtor 10.0gb that I bought in Mar. 1999 and I just sold it on ebay last July for like $15. It works 100% after 5 years.

So far none of my HD's have had problems. I have a 160 Maxtor and a 120 WD, but it hasn't been 3 years yet...maybe like 2 for the WD. So far so good. You probably just got unlucky.

Back when I was the hardware guy for a company, we bought a whole bunch of computers from a company; they all had Western Digital drives. As soon as their warranties expired, we had a whole bunch of them fail, all within a month or two of each other.

Ouch! I've got two 40GB WD drives at home, one running my Linux file server.

My main machine uses an 80GB Maxtor, though. I've never had issues with either brand.

Check your power supply, or the RAID adapter. It's quite probable that any other drives you hook up will also die, especially if you have a dodgy power supply.

Confused

and it dont matter thats what General hardware is for =P

I just had a IDE 120gig WD die last week, only 5months old, the power supply thing I might have to look into. I have a 530wat ernamax but its 3 yeas only and has not been treated very nice, I Overclock the Cr@p out of everything. Im overcolcking my vid card, my proc, mem have 4 80mm case fans and one 120mm case fane a 6800gt a DVD and CDRW drive and 2 hdd.

On the upside WD had me a replacement the NEXT day, I did have to pay $19 for the next day service.

The drive itself had a 3 year warranty

Had two WD drives die...one 8 months into the 3 year warranty and the second was the replacement they sent me for the first about 6 weeks later. Still have one WD that's over 2 years old and running great (same drive as the two that died) but I will not be buying another WD. Different cables, motherboard and the powersupply is a Antec (tested).

My raptors have been running without a hitch. My Hitachi (IBM) continues to making "meowing" noises every 10-12 minutes and occasionally goes through a clicking frenzy at 2am. :frown:

The "meowing" is a design feature to help avoid the "deathstar" problems related to the IBM drives. It's normal.

I'm a huge fan of Seagate drives.

They may not be the absolute fastest harddrive, but they are quiet and super reliable. I've had mine for at least a year now and it's works perfectly.

Plus I always make sure to have a fan blowing over my harddrives at all times to keep the temperatures down.

I'd be inclined to think PSU before blaming the drives by themselves...

it's rare a drive just up and quits, without substantial usage behind it... WD might give you a freebie on this one... give'em a ring...
