My GF and I come home with the Matrix Reloaded DVD. I turn on the TV only to find the picture is all red. My first thought was that the colour settings had been reset, or something. No, they were at the levels I left them at. Next, I checked the cable connection. On tight. Then I checked the splitter. All connections tight. I removed the other two lines, just to be sure they weren't causing interference. No effect.

The TV is a four or five year-old 27" Zenith. Yes, I know Zenith's are shite, but it was given to me by my grandmother.

Is my TV permenantly damaged? I'm not keen on the idea of forking out for a new one...

Well, if the picture's that way no matter what you watch then yes the TV is broken. If it's that way only for DVDs then it could be the AV jacks or it could be your player.

No magnet anywhere near the TV. We haven't even tried popping a DVD in yet.

What kind of connection is it? svideo? It's entirely possible the pins carrying the Green and Blue color infomration could have been bent.....

magnets cause those watchamacallits - the name has something to do with "fields". not an even discoloration...

I'm thinking the TV is dying. IIRC, you can lose only the blue, or only the green, or only the red, and any combination thereof in a CRT, right?

Just tried moving it to a different outlet and cable connection. No dice.

You either have a CRT failure or a video output circuit failure.

The set uses Red, Green & Blue images to create color. You have excessive red happening (you needed me to tell you that lol)

Find a local servicer, my shop will diagnose a problem like that for a $20 walk in diagnosis fee and 2-3 day turnaround time on repairs.

Is it a solid red screen? or just a red tint to the image? With some more detailed info i can probably give ya a rough idea of repair cost

Magnets can cause color "blotches", but the most common cause of a red haze, or a solid red screen is a component failure in the TV. Yes it can be the CRT, but if it is not the CRT it can be economically and reliably repaired...

Sorry, I should have been more specific. The screen isn't totally red, the image is tinted red. There are other colours coming through, but red is predominant. White appears almost purple; yellow, orange, brown are all red; blue is in there, but there is no green. The on-screen menu on the TV is in yellow text, but now it comes up as completely red.

It's the TV and it's very common with the Zenith's of that time period. I had one that did the same thing, only with the red color dying and everything being blue, and my neighbor had the same set do that same thing yours is. A local TV repairman said it is very common with the Zenith's. I threw mine away.

This happened with my old bedroom set.. told my dad about it... he brought a huge magnet (within wires) and moved it around the tv screen... problem fixed instantly.

Don't ask me how or why it worked... he's the electronics technician.

I *think* it's a similar situation to CRT computer monitors having to be "degaussed"...

Thanks guys!

I guess it's headed for the bin. I'm probably going to replace it with the 24" Samsung flat screen, model TXN2434F. My GF has a Sony Wega flat screen and I like it, but the Samsung offers more features at a much better price.

Check out the JVC flatscreens...better picture than the WEGA's and the Panasonic's IMO. :)

You're TV is moving too fast in the time/space continuum. You're experiencing a doppler-red shift.

Try reversing polarity on the intake manifolds, while adjusting your subspace inducers... that should slow it down.

Could be.

Is everything in slow motion?

Try every input, with different sources. Will rule out a specific input/source issue.

If every input does the same it's a problem further down the video display end. If it's only one input it could be that a connection is off internally. Could be something as simple as a cold solder joint in the connector itself, or a lose component.
