I've never heard of that phrase either...

Flip-flopper mentioned in the article seems like a good choice.

I don't think they're literally nominating the phrase, rather they're nominating a list of 3 words as part of a larger subset that represent a major idea for the year(that being the division among the red repub states, blue demo states, and the purple mixed states). Taken in this context, their selection makes perfect sense.

I've heard flip-flopper enough that one more time will make my head explode.

I'm sure the Linguistic Society of America is just looking for a little bit of recognition.

The funnies thing (to me) about the whole "Red State, Blue State" crap of this election is that no one seems to realize that the colors will reverse in 2008 (Dems will be red, Pubs will be blue). The colors actually go back and forth every 4 year election, not based on party, but on which is the incumbent party and which is the challenging party. As the Pubs were the challengers in 2000, and then the incumbents in 2004, they were red for both elections, but they wil be the incumbent again in 2008, and so the colors will switch.

Anyway, proof positive that the media has no memory of the past, nor vision of the future.
