TW: I've had a number of great experiences recently, but one of the best happened just the other day and really brought together a bunch of the cool new elements in Doom III. I was making my way through one of the more lab-type areas of the game and started down a hallway. As I got about halfway down the hall, one of the zombie scientists approached from the next room. I was low on ammo and health and wanted to lure him down the hall, away from any other enemies in the next room, so I retreated to the previous room and waited. As he moved down the hallway, the light behind him was much stronger, so he cast a long shadow that moved ahead of him--I could see him coming just by his shadow. When he was finally in front of me, I shot him square in the chest with the shotgun. He just happened to be standing in front of a window to another room, and the force of the shotgun blast blew him back through the window and down a short set of stairs. We utilize "rag doll" physics on our characters, so his body tumbled perfectly down the stairs to the bottom. It was one of those moments where you just say, "Wow!"

Ok, WTF! What game was he playing? With id's "Advanced Corpse Disappearing technology", it would be impossible for that last part to happen (dead zombie body tumbling down the stairs). This is an older interview, I understand this, but seriously. I'm thinking the game would have been more enjoyable w/o the die-like-the-vampires-in-Blade deaths.

Also, when he says, "...the more lab-type areas of the game..". Isnt that, like, the majority of the game? I liked the game, and as most of you know, I gave it a 8/10. But damn, just reading this interview kind of annoyed me. I can't help but think that the game was better earlier on in development. Maybe it spent too much time in development hell?

Like that ever happens =/

I know, right? I recently played through the game on Veteran (the one before nightmare) and even then, I was walking around with 200+ shells witht he shotgun and full armor and health. Hell, the shotgun was my main wep too!

Did you guys read the interview? Another fun quote is later in the intervewi when he's talking about the shotgun and says its good for long distant shots, LMFAO!

I hope that id meant to make D3 as the other Doom series. If they thought of and spend effort on D3's game play and thought it was okay, that'd be just so wrong. D3 was so good for an hour and it became so boring and predictable. Well, I have quite high hopes for their upcoming brand new project.

yea, me too. I'm hopeing they take head and really listen to the constructive critisizm across the net. I think they're an amazing company.

BTW, did you read my review I wrote up on this game? On of my comments was how the first 2 hours were the best hours of playing the game.

my review

Yea, there are several mods that do this too. But, out-of-the-box gameplay doesnt. this means that it wasnt intended by the developer. :-/

That's why there's a modding community - to make the games better.

the Nitro Gore Mod keeps the corpses and increases the blood and gore.

If you refer back to another thread. Someone stated that in the alpha version, bodies did not dissapear. If this is an old interview then it most likely took place before the design decision to make bodies dissapear. This was obviously a necessary decision to keep the frame rates playable and I doubt that anyone on the team really liked having to do this. You can see the amazing physics / ragdoll affects everytime you fire a rocket though.

The shotgun may have been effective at long range also at one point in the alpha. Perhaps it was changed for game balance. The previous doom games had sniper-esque shotguns that could pick sh!t off at any distance.

Man, your review is as tight as it can be. I really think you should join id or direct them how to make a good(better) game. Your idea about the ghost and baby is, indeed, A+.

Yet another thread that can be summed up in one sentence:

"Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!!!! Doom 3 doesn't have water like Far Cry and bouncing bodies like Painkiller - IT SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!! Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!"

Sheesh.

I'm surprised that more people are complaining that it's not a 3rd-person platformer game with a main character that's like a hotter Lara Croft. Maybe some musical segments like DDR or something. If you're going to complain, be creative about it!

You should try to dig up some of the rumored "features" that iD was supposedly putting into Quake 1, while it was in development. Quite a bit different than what the game actually turned out to be, about 90% of the rumored features were cut or changed entirely. I'm not surprised at all, I'm going to assume that the paragraph you quoted was more "underground iD marketing" than any actual depiction of gameplay at the time.

I'd just like to take this time to say, what an amazing game Quake1 was :)
