WTF? The Matrix Excuse?

Was just watching some morning news on ABC. Since "The Matrix: Reloaded" was one of the big stories this weekend, the liberals over at ABC had to whine. They had this 5-10 minute segment on how more and more murderers are blaming the "The Matrix" for their actions. They sited Columbine (black trenchcoats) and the sniper shootings of last year as examples. They said that "the Matrix Excuse" has been used in courts already, and in one case, the judge deemed the guy insane for that excuse.

Just like your parents use to say: It's just a movie!

Just another example of the "Not guilty because I'm defective, but it is not my fault that I am." defense. Movies, music, games, and cartoons have all been portrayed as the instrument of social awareness nullifacation.
I saw it in the movie so I thought it was OK to shoot him.
That's what the song said to do.
Wily E. Coyote always gets what's coming to him so I figured he deserved it to.
I played so much Doom that when I see people in a hallway at school, I always envision shooting them.

As far as I'm concerned, anyone using this type of defense should be deemed "unrepairable" and encouraged to commit suicide.

Silly, but at least the Matrix 2 was a dissapointment such that not many people will model their criminal careers after it.

The much anticipated sequel, THE MATRIX RELOADED opened to gigantic box office as it hit theaters kicking Thursday and never slowed down. It had a record shattering debut day of $42.5 million on Thursday - the best single opening day ever - beating previous champ, SPIDER-MAN ($39 million). It then barreled through the weekend making another $93.2 million for a total of $135.7 million. It was the second biggest opening weekend ever behind SPIDER-MAN which made $115 million last May. Dan Fellman, president of distribution at Warner Bros said the film has already grossed in four days what the original took five weeks to earn. It also marks the best debut ever for a "R" rated film.

Quite the disappointment, hahahaha.

Opening movies don't rely on reviews or quality of the movie, but the hype. The movie wasn't as good as the first, that's what I mean by dissapointment - not the box office numbers.

This isn't just a liberal thing. It's a conservative thing too. Remember how the religious right jumped on the story when Ted Bundy tried to blame porn for him being a serial killer?

When ANY activist finds something potentially damning what they are fighting, they will jump on it. No matter how absurd it is.

Well I thought it was as good or a little better than the first...It's all a matter of opinion. We'll see how it does in theatres compared to the first Matrix...

The correlation between ticket sales and how the general public perceives the quality of a movie is weak, at best. Take for example how many movies made before 1980 could hold a candle to movie debuts these days? Not a single one, but it doesn't mean they are not as good. The question needs to be asked directly as I have just done in another thread. then i can stop screwing around in this one :)

Maybe weak if the movie had a huge debut and then dropped off suddenly, meaning everyone saw it and thought it sucked. Not weak if there's a huge opening and the movie continues to do well. That means repeat viewers and others seeing it because of the general approval of it.

Anyways...You're always going to get people to love it or hate it. At least it's generating opinion and not just a consensus of "ehhh, it's OK." :)

Why do they always try to rationalize peoples actions then, and refuse to put the blame on the individual and the actions that he took? God forbid anyone have any responsiblity for their own actions.
