The Dragon Warrior series and ActRaiser are probably the most famous RPGs they've made. They also made one called SoulBlazer for SNES that was pretty good.

I just hope that whatever they make is not like the recent Final Fantasy's. FF8 really disappointed me, FF9 was a little better, but FFX just completely sucked imo.

Actraiser for SNES ruled. Hopefully now they have the resources to make a next gen version

Apparently I'm the only person that thinks this is a bad idea. Now we have one company to pump out games, instead of two companies. I dunno, I just liked the idea of them being separate companies making separate games better.

I understand that, but neither company was making crap games to begin with. Lately the FF series hasn't been the best ... but Kingdom Hearts was a great game.

I guess we will see when the game comes out.

I too think it's a bad idea for them to merge. I don't think I've ever seen a good game when two major companies work together to create a masterpiece. (IMO, they usually lose their strengths when work together on a project. AKA, lose their color.)

Just my throught.

This is good news for the PS2 (mostly) and GC (somewhat)...bad news for the X-box...

Lets see who gets the majority of exclusive games. I am thinking, that the PS2 will probably get the better end of this merger...but with Square soon to release FF:CC for GC who knows....

If we're lucky one day they'll make an RPG that isn't as straight as an arrow :| I wish consoles could get some non-linear RPGs (and morrowind for xbox doesn't count).

Retro Studios and Nintendo merged to create Metroid Prime :)

All I know is, I would pay a large sum of money for a FF7 remake.

I don't think it's an April Fool's joke. I was talking to one of my friends at lunch about it today and he said he was pretty sure that April 1 is just the beginning of the fiscal year for the companies. That's what I thought last night when I first read this thread.

What are you talking about? The Central Story line of the final fantasy games is pretty straight true, but that's like calling a book linear. Of course it is, you turn it page by page and read.

The final fantasy games have little side quests to, but when you are telling a story there has to be some linearness to it, or it's not a story anymore.
There are always those little joke "pick your own adventure" books, but seriously, how many really good books have been written like that?

I haven't played any Dragon Warriors games in a long time though so I dont' know how they are.

I'm not sure how Morrowwind is not having played it much, but Daggerfall attempted to be non-linear so hard that it had no central storyline at all.
I had the same problem with Baldur's Gate. They threw so much side quest crap at me that I lost interest in trying to figure out what the main storyline was...it wasn't nearly as bad as Daggerfall...and I don't know maybe Morrowwind is better...but the PC doesn't have the same calibur of RPG that Square and Enix put out. I enjoyed Baldur's Gate well enough...but it was just a less frantic Diablo. It didn't have nearly the storytelling quality that the Final Fantasies do.

The Final Fantasies have a nice strong central storyline that keeps you interested and tells you a story as you progess along. They have plenty of side quests and other things to do outside the main story line though as well.

I'm all for side quests and sub plots, but you need a strong central storyline first. And I'd rather have the latter with less of the former, than lots of the former and not much of the latter.

they have one or two... i'm thinking of that game on ps1, by square..with multiple characters and it is anti linear... i was bored to tears playing it... what is it..oh yes the SAGA series...

i think morrowind is a bit linear.... but then again, i played it on pc

Have you played Dragon Quest 7? If you haven't, you should. The game is almost completely non-linear and very much the same as the original Dragon Warrior's from the NES. DQ7 is 2 CDs and there is very, very little FMV on either CD.

well since the quality of everything except the FMV scenes has dropped over at square i would think that this becomes a non-argument

as for RPG, square hasn't made one of those in years. interactive movie, yes. RPG, no. BG was far better from that standpoint, but its still locked in. the best RPG ever is still ultima online.

I agree with Skoorb, this is the reason I like Baldurs Gate 2 so much, it is very NON-linear. There is a purpose but it's up to you how you get there, who you have, and what other side-quests you decide to do in order to GET to the end.

Despite the fact that I like FF9 and FFX nearly as much as the Super Nintendo games, this is true in a way. I like the interactive story of the Final Fantasy games, but I suppose it is a very different style of game than Baldur's Gate, and if that is what you consider the standard for an RPG then FF isn't really one.

i think it will be like the WWF, i refuse to call them the WWE......i grew up with WWF, where WWF was good when it had the WCW to compete with. Now that they are the only ones, its fell off.

Now with no close competitors, you think they will make good games?
