Heh, saw that last night.

I like the idea behind Foveon and I think the images and colors are nice, but I don't understand how they're so expensive. 15MPx3 blah blah blah. It's crazy. It's not medium format (even if they try to label it as such), lowlight has been a disappointment, and the bodies don't compete well against Canikon Pro bodies.

Speaking of the 5DMIII, new rumors out today from CR:

  • 32mp
  • ISO 100-25600 (L1, H1, H2, H3)
  • DIGIC V
  • 4.2fps
  • 19point AF
  • CF Card
  • Slightly larger LCD (new ratio)
  • New autofocus while filming, performance unknown.
  • All the standard video stuff.
  • RAW video still unknown

i'm gonna get a 5D Mark 3 to supplement my Mark 2... I was really really looking forward to the SD-1.... As a straight photographic tool... I was thinking "1.5k I might bite". But for 9K? no way now. Sure it has amazing print quality, the B&W's are quite amazing (the noise gathered in the Foveon sensors at High ISO's B&W are actually really pleasing to see... lots of stylistic-type noise) and the lenses are average.... with a few that do knock them out of the ball park. They are quite a bit cheaper than your average Canikon, and I'm guessing build quality doesn't hold up.

oh well... it was a nice "hope" to get prints that a medium format DSLR can hit, with a compact size of a standard 35mm... in a APS-C sized sensor!

You guys talking about the superior quality of Sigma / Foven imagery are using web-rez samples for a comparison.

I shoot and typically sell 20x30" metal prints, and my 60D scales to that DPI *MUCH* better than the SD14/15 can. I spent hours trying to get SD14/15 sample files to scale to the same quality at 240dpi and they coulnd't. If my goal were to post web-rez monochrome images the SD14/15 are very good at that.

Pros are not going to dump their MF and FF digital systems for a quasi 30-40meg APS-C system.

Metal prints aren't exactly what I call 'demanding' as far as IQ goes. I've never actually seen a print from a Fovean, but almost any photography device used well can produce good 20*30s.

Sigma's website makes no sense. They say the MSRP of the SD1 alone is $9700, but the price of any of the SD1 kits is much less???

that's almost like saying "what good is the body when are lenses are canon or nikon?" Leica + Zeiss FTW

Things have changed and recent Sigma lenses are quite good in terms of resolution.
It seems like Sigma is going after resolution and MTF chart performance disregarding other side of the matter. I'm not liking it but it goes along with their Foveon sensored cameras.

what good is the body when all the lenses are sigma

There are many great lenses in the current Sigma lineup...50mm f/1.4, 85mm f/1.4, 150mm Macro OS, 120-300 f/2.8, etc.

Besides, the SD1 has an APS-C censor so the lenses' edge and corner performance does not matter one bit.
