Virtualearth is just using USGS 1m satellite imagery. NASA has a program called WorldWind that uses a combination of USGS satellite, and full and false color LANDSAT imagery, with an interface much like google earth. It does not have some of the high-res aerial photography that google earth has, but in areas that google earth does not have photos of, it is much better.
