Router/Firewall question...

I had a firewall sales guy visit me and he claims that you can put a firewall in front of a router... any truth to that ? how can a firewall understand BGP protocol ? hahaha

BGP & router question..

Who here can run DSL with bgp or known to run bgp with cable or dsl ? or business dsl ? I need to save money.. please let me know..

Sex ? Male, yes i'm a male

There's ABSOLUTELY no reason that a cable or DSL connection would need BGP.

You get a default route out, that's the usual way, and the best way: it takes no (extra) processing power, and the forwarding occurs much faster.

Let the ISPs handle the BGP stuff (or, if you happen to be a fairly large business, you wouldn't be screwing around with DSL/Cable).

I gotta ask, what exactly are you doing that U want to run BGP over dsl? what size of business is this?

What are you calling a "router"? A SOHO share-your-DSL-line jobbie or a real Cisco box that runs a T1+ circuit? If it's the former, then yes, a firewall can sit outside of it. If it's the latter, then no.. A firewall doesn't talk "circuit" it just talks Ethernet. There's a few integrated router/firewalls, but they really aren't ready for prime time for most large businesses.

first rule of IT - don't listen to salesmen. they are lying most of the time (no bull) unless you have already built a good relationship with them.

You can run BGP thru a firewall - BGP runs on a simple TCP connection. But like Garion said, not to many firewalls out there with a HSSI port or OC3 port on them. Sounds like the salesguy is really trying to make a sale - wink, wink...hey buddy I'll tell you anything you want to hear just buy it so I can make my numbers.

On the cable/dsl with BGP. I've never heard of it. If you need to run BGP you will be looking at tier1 providers with DS3 or OC3 links to them. BGP is rarely needed on an internet connection.

I'm running bgp in US offices which is cheap, but in UK, it's almost double of here.. so I need a cheap backup solution, I have a primary E1 2mb but I been told that when it goes down in UK, it goes down for 2-3 days... and a second E1 or 1megger E1 is around 1400 pounds a month... x1.4 = 1960 USD.. it's double of whats here.. so I like to find a cheaper solution

The rules of communication is totally different in UK, I can't believe it's like totally backwards..

Router is cisco 3640 w/128mb dual wan card and 1 lan card
firewall is netscreen 204

the stoopid sales guy called again trying to sell me stuff.. ah i hate dealing with these guys.. they think i'm a total idiot.. i'm runing 7 t1 over 2 router on bgp in US and like to get something cheaper for uk.. i know dsl isn't something you can run bgp over... but its just money problem..

I seen fat pipe when it first came out.. isn't the problem that if ur primary circuit goes down, u can still go out but people wont be able to reach you ?
