Rat meat... it is what for dinner!!

...rat and other meat that had not been tested for quality and safety, processed it with additives like gelatin and passed it off as lamb.

...Despite years of food scandals—from milk contaminated with an industrial chemical to the use of industrial dyes in eggs—China has been unable to clean up its food supply chain

James Clavell, one of my favorite authors, wrote "King Rat" back in 1965 about a POW who gamed the system. He served Rat as little tiny tiki deer, to his fellow prison inmates, and guards.

Mmmm, tiki deer. Delicious.

“And Adam ruled, for he was the King. Until the day his will to be King deserted him. Then he died, food for a stronger. And the strongest was always the King, not by strength alone, but King by cunning and luck and strength together. Among the rats.”

James Clavell, "King Rat"

Remember the part where the chaplain Drinkwater filched some of that roasted deer and vomited after Marlowe told him what it really was.

We should start a list of positive things about China. I'll go first.

1) It's way over there.

Same thing here, just that the FDA funding cut no longer allows you to know.
But thats nothing...
You would never believe what is passed off as rat meat.
You can find it served at most any fast food chains under various other names.
(we're talking US-A, not Chin-A)

if you eat mass manufactured fast food i.e. taco bell / mc donalds / burger king you have been eating rat crap and worse for years.

Rat meat has long been part of the diet of people in parts of China, Southeast, and South Asia.

It taste a lot like Chicken. People need to learn to stop being very ethnocentric and close minded.

People eat raw beef so how is this more gross? Or is it only gross when the non-Western countries do something different?

I think rat would be a huge upgrade over what taco bell currently serves....

I think we just ate some rat or dog or something a few months ago. It was supposed to be goat... it did not taste like goat AT ALL> Jamaican restauran

For the people saying that all meat tastes like chicken or you can't tell the difference... you need to get your tongue cleaned or something if you can't tell the difference.

Nah, like beetles and other insects.

That's a bad attitude. Rotten meat even rat is a great medium for raising blow fly larva. Washed and fried with soy sauce, yum yum. It's what's for dinner in our future. Vertical protein farming right at the slaughter house.

Nah, like beetles and other insects.

You know, I did try crickets stuffed with peanuts and deep fried while I was in Asia and I do have to say it was not bad at all.

About the article, I think if the people who purchased the "meat" would not be so upset if they had been told the truth. They purchased the meat as "lamb" (more than likely with a premium price) but it really was rat meat. Imagine you purchased a Vette but it really was a Yugo.

To make it worse, food scandals in China are on-going problems for years. They have tainted milk with babies being sick and/or dead, pork meat being treat with chemicals to become beef (with higher price), explosive watermelons (from being injected with chemicals) and so on.

I've had Chinese lamb.

Can't tell if it tasted bad because it was rat or because it's Chinese lamb.
