Guys I need help. I wanted to redo the thermal paste for my computer and I am using P4 2.4ghz 533mhz with a Soyo SY-P4VTE Mobo. At first I was using the stock HSF w/ intel. But then I decided to redo the thermal paste with AS5 and now when I turn on my cpu it runs at 85C according to BIOS Hardware Monitor feature!! I did this twice! It still gives me same temps! Can someone help?!?!

How much paste did you use, and did you completely clean off the old stuff first? Sounds like you used too much. You only need a very small amount, about the size of a grain of rice. It could also be that the heatsink didn't get put back on correctly, if it's that hot, the heatsink should be hot to the touch, if it's not, it's not making good contact.

The heatsink does not feel hot at all. I cleaned the old stuff off the heatsink with 70% isoproply alcohol and a microfiber towel. Same thing with the processor. Then I put about a grain of rice AS5 on processor and put heatsink on the processor and turned clockwise and couterclockwise about a degree or two like it says in instructions.

EDIT: I just took it off again, it looks just like it did on the AS5 website. A small circle of the stuff on the heatsink and processor. Although there is more than was on AS5 website; maybe a substantial amount.

Okay, I just took off the HSF and put it right back on without taking any AS5 off and now it is running around 45C in the BIOS??!?! I think the temp monitor is broken?

I think it just wasn't making good contact, and when you re-seated it again, it is now making good contact. Try putting it under load now, and watch your temps, it will probably get to the mid or upper 50's but no worse. You probably still have a bit too much AS5 on, but I wouldn't do it again unless your load temps are getting in to the mid 60's. All it's for is to fill in microscopic gaps in the surface of the heatsink and IHS, so you want a very very thin layer, or it starts trapping the heat rather than helping to disipate it.

^ What he said.

With socket 478/754/939/940 having a plastic bracket around the CPU area to contain the HSF, it is easy to accidentally have the heatsink sit on one edge of the plastic, thus causing it to not make enough contact. The heatsink will still go on, but you may (or may not) notice that it is a bit more difficult to get latched down.

Yea, it was a lot harder to latch on one side and not other before. I guess I'll just leave it then. Thanks!
