I have a Optorite 8x +- DVD Combo Drive.

I updated the firmware because it was not successfully erasing rewritables. I updated it from 100E to 120E and it said, in very bad english I might add, that the process had completed successfully, and that I needed to reboot.

Upon reboot the drive is now dead. HTe buttons o the drive do NOT work either. The system takes FOREVER to identify IDE devices @ boot, and the HD activity light remains on indefinitely. IF I totally unplug the drive, the system boots up normally.

I have been told that there are programs that can access the drive via the IDE cable and not the bios. Or do you think Optorite's Flash utility will find the drive even if the bios and windows do not?

Thanks

there is a way to flash your drive even if the bios cannot recognize it.

I used "MTKFLASH" to flash both my dvd and cdrw drives that was not recognized by bios after a bad flash.

your main problem is finding the proper bios and I am not sure MTKFLASH will work in your fairly new 8x XDVD writer.

cant hurt to try since it is already broken.

Read the guides to MTKFLASH some say they only work with the drive as a slave.
aslo try different versions of MTKFLASH as some of the newer versions did not work for me good luck.

PS
My bad flash was related to a bad flash from my 4x optorite dvd writer, somehow it flashed my cdrw instead.
I make it a point now to remove my other drives when flashing my drives specially when flashing in windows

MTK is useless. The drive does not even POWER ON.

I am in the process of arranging an RMA....too bad I needed the drive working for christmas. needed to mail out some home movies to the folks.

I like your Drives Optorite, but you really Fvcked up this time:|

I emailed them about a week ago with a problem, bad firmware flash, DD201, never recieved a reply. A couple weeks ago I emailed them and asked what the firmware flash did and I recieved a reply within one day. I guess as long as you don't need help, you will get a reply. I flashed with the newest firmware and it worked on the first burn, but a no go on the second. May have been something I did wrong.

"MTK is useless. The drive does not even POWER ON. "

this may not matter my drive had the led light permanently on and would hang my computer on bios detection.
I was able to flash it on another computer under dos. (even though the bios was unable to detect it)
I think MTKFLASH flashes whatever drive you direct it to (slave /master) regardless of it current state

cant hurt to try.

good luck on your RMA
