World's nicest guy, but not exactly Mr. Goodwrench. Somehow the conversation came around to him saying his big phobia was being trapped in a slowly submerging car and drowning. He said he wanted to get a battery powered hammer so that he could break the window and escape. I pointed out to him that good old fashioned manual hammers work just as well, as does rolling down the window using the crank. I think he'd get along well with the ex-girlfriend I had once that wanted me to come by and change a light bulb for her because she didn't know how (evidently, her father would always come by and do it for her so she never bothered to learn)

Not any hammer will work. A hammer with a pointed end, or a hole punch works best for breaking a car window.

Actually ANY hammer WILL work.....but it is much easier with a pointed one or a spring loaded center punch.

Glenn1, how would any old hammer work? The water would work against your muscles and you wouldn't be able to punch through it under water. Also, since most cars have electric windows standard, how does "rolling it down with the crank work?"

That's why a spring loaded hole punch is best.

Well if the thought is that a regular hammer will be hard to swing through water, then wouldn't a battery powered hammer short out? Otherwise the windows would still be working...
