WTF? New hard disk (1 month old) suddenly not accessible...

I have a brand new 200Gb Maxtor DM9+ thats been running fine for about a month now. Now all of a sudden when I click it in "My Computer" windows asks if I would like to format this new drive... :Q

What could do this? BIOS sees it fine, Windows sees it fine, cables have been checked, just the data (120Gb) is gone and windows thinks it's a new unformatted drive???????

Any ideas where to start looking?

Sounds like a filesystem corruption to me.

Find a copy of R-Studio or some similar program, recover your data then reformat 😉.

The drive should be fine. Try using Windows Recovery Console (off the CD) to repair the paritition. Or run chkdsk /f to run the next time you reboot..

Thanks for the repplies. Windows recovery console did not help, picking up some restore software this afternoon to see if that helps. Anyway, i have backups so its not a big problem. I'm just wondering.

Could this be a virus doing that?

...and CraigRT, I like my maxtors 🙂 Got 20 running in my office and 4 at home. Never had any problems.
Switched after 3 Seagates crapped out on me in 1weeks time.

I also have our server (IBM Netfinity) running Maxtor SCSi drives (16 total) from 1999 almost 24/7 and none has crapped out yet!
