Yes, AM3 processors work on AM2 motherboards. It doesn't work the other way around though. (AM2 processors on AM3 motherboards)

Interestingly though, AMD is apparently planning to allow end users to not only drop in an AM2+ processor into their AM2 motherboard, but also future 45nm socket AM3 processors too. These processors aren’t scheduled for launch until sometime in the second half of 2008.

$EDIT this looks like a good upgrade option for me. I want to get a 2nd ATI 4850 but my socket AM2 athlon x2 5000 is a bottleneck for my fav games at the moment. A nice quad core could change that =)

The HT maybe reduced tho

I've heard that makes a negligible performance difference in gaming

although i have found NOTHING on google searching, forum searching, for anyone to give me hard data on what the HT Reduction does to gaming
