Last month - $74
This month - $143

I usually expect a decent increase when the summer months hit, but my A/C hasn't been on all that much more than last month afaik. Every year past the increase was gradual, $70's in the winter months, $120's in the summer.

Something funky is going on.

Did the price per KwH spike or something?

Amount of your last bill 74.79
Payment received - Thank you 74.79CR
Balance before new charges $0.00

New charges (Rate: RS-1 RESIDENTIAL SERVICE )
Electric service amount 137.47**

Total new charges $142.51

Total amount you owe $142.51

23, 2008, and your account may be subject to being billed an
additional deposit.

This is from last month;

kWh used 734
Energy usage
Last This
year year
kWh this month 869 734
Service days 29 29
kWh/day 30 25
**The electric service amount
includes the following charges:
Customer charge: $5.34 per month
Fuel: $38.37
(First 1000 kWh at $0.052270)
(Over 1000 kWh at $0.062270)
Non-fuel: $30.34
(First 1000 kWh at $0.041340)
(Over 1000 kWh at $0.051660)

So it looks like the price per KwH stayed the same. Hrmph, something is odd.

Nope, thats what I can't figure out. All my lights are CCFL and we rarely leave them on, A/C is programmable and lets the house get warmer during the mid-day. Nothing is really all that different between the months, certainly not twice as much.

Well, it did get quite a bit warmer from May to June.

I'd suspect your AC is cycling on a bit more these days.

If the meter is read by a human (and not remotely), they will guess at a bill if they didn't get out to read it, then correct it later. This might be your problem. If not, you may have a drain that you need to find. Perhaps your water heater (assuming it's electric) has a problem like a dead element or bad thermostat.

You're just lucky not to live in Juneau Alaska. A landslide took down their power (hydroelectric) and they've been relying on diesel generators. My relatives were hit with $700-800 or higher bills for just one month of electric service.

Take a look at your meter late tonight, or early tomorrow morning, and record it. Make it a point to not use your A/C at all for the day.

Read the meter the next night or early morning, and find the difference. If it's closer to 25 than 42, than it's likely your A/C is cycling more than you realize.
If it's closer to 42 than 25, you might have something else using an inordinate amount of electricity (say, a water heater going bad, or refrigerator going bad).

I know your rates are the same, but they may be going up soon. The electricity rates at my parents house went up about 50% a month ago. Luckily, they are in a contract for the old rate for a few months. High fuel costs affects more than gas prices!

Check your own meter :)

His reading from his last bill was quite a bit lower than the same month last year. Perhaps they estimated last month and brought it up to reality this month.

I think Bryophyte has the right idea. This month your consuption in KWH was a bit more than the same month last year. Last month, same story: this year roughly comparable to last year. And yet, in BOTH cases this month is almost double last month. It looks a lot like the electric company is using May as the time to correct any previous billing errors by plugging in real meter readings, instead of estimates.
