Update: Well last night, about 13 hours after I felt these light tremors, there was an earthquake 450km's south east of here in Perth. I was fast asleep so I didn't feel a thing. So, just an update to let you know what happened.
Earthquake hits WA
An earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale hit southeast Western Australia this morning, the strongest quake in the area in 30 years.
The quake hit the Ravensthorpe-Hopetoun area 450km southeast of Perth about 1.43am (WST), a spokesman from Geoscience Australia in Canberra said today.
The earthquake measured 5.3 on the Richter scale - the strongest in the area in 30 years - but that no damage had been reported.
"We are still getting information to update the rating," said.
"It's the biggest we have had in that particular region, the Albany/Esperance area, for about the last 30 years.
"The only other one was 4.3."
It is the second earthquake over 5 on the Richter scale to be recorded in the west over the last month, with a 5.1 quake registering near the town of Cadoux, 200km northeast of Perth, about three weeks ago.
"That was extensively felt as far as Perth, but we have had no reports from Perth from this latest one," the spokesman said.
He said the region northeast of Perth was usually more active in terms of seismic activity, and residents of the Albany and Esperance area had been ringing in to report feeling the quake.
"We haven't had reports (of tremors) from far away, yet people in the Esperance and Albany areas have rung in from 1am to 2am local time," he said.
He said investigations by Geoscience Australia would continue into the day, with specialist equipment being despatched to the area.
"We will continue investigations as the day goes on. We will be deploying instruments into the area to see if there are aftershocks," he said.
The December 28th, 1989, earthquake which devastated Newcastle, killing 13 people measured 5.6 on the Richter scale.
There have been reports from Perth. Police at the head office reported it.
So, that was my excitement for the day. Anybody else been in an earthquake?
