WTF? Monitor resolution beyond spec...

My Studioworks 995E is only supposed to be able to go to 1600X1200. However, I just installed nVidia's latest drivers and so was screwing around with my settings, and thought, on a lark, to see how high my monitor would go. Well, it went up to 2048X1536. Is this normal? I know you can over-refresh you monitor, sometimes, but I didn't think you could set it a resolution higher than it is spec'd for.
