BALTIMORE, Maryland (AP) -- Three women pleaded guilty Thursday for their roles in the savage beating of a 12-year-old girl at a birthday party -- an attack prompted by a kiss on the cheek she received from a boy.

The three included the mother of the birthday girl. Police said Monique Baldwin, 37, apparently became offended because the boy was supposed to be her daughter's boyfriend. She allegedly urged the attackers to "handle your business."

Nicole Townes went into a three-week coma after she was beaten and kicked at the February 2004 sleep-over. Her 11-year-old sister was also beaten.

Baldwin pleaded guilty to assault and child abuse and could get 30 years in prison at sentencing May 2.

Erin Baldwin, 20, pleaded guilty to assault and was sentenced to four years in prison. Kenya Keene, 25, pleaded guilty to reckless endangerment and assault and could receive six years behind bars May 2.

A plea agreement for a 16-year-old girl fell through. Two other teenage girls pleaded guilty last year.

UPDATE:

Two Women Sentenced in Birthday Attack

By BRIAN WITTE, AP

BALTIMORE (May 2) - Two women received maximum prison sentences Monday for their roles in the savage beating of a 12-year-old girl at a birthday party, an attack prompted by a kiss on the cheek from a boy acting on a dare.

Monique Baldwin, 37, was sentenced to 30 years after pleading guilty in March to first-degree assault and second-degree child abuse for instigating other children at the party to beat Nicole Townes, who went into a three-week coma after the attack.

Kenya Keene, 25, received a six-year sentence on reckless endangerment and second-degree assault charges.

"I hope you suffer ... for what you did to my angel," Wayne Townes, Nicole's father, said before the sentences were handed down.

Baltimore Circuit Judge Kaye Allison said she ordered the maximum sentences to send a message that the women's "incomprehensible" behavior won't be tolerated.

Before sentencing, Baldwin and Keene wiped tears from their eyes as prosecutor Julie Drake recounted the beating. Baldwin told other children at the February 2004 sleepover to beat Nicole, instructing them: "Don't stop until she bleeds."

Baldwin apparently had been offended because the boy was supposed to be her daughter's boyfriend. Keene conspired to conceal what had happened when paramedics arrived.

Nicole's sister, Brenda Bailey, 11, was also beaten.

Keene struck the younger girl several times and deliberately delayed obtaining medical treatment for Nicole. When medics arrived, she told them Nicole had suffered a diabetic episode. The misinformation and delay in treatment resulted in a worsening of the girl's condition.

Drake said Nicole doesn't remember the attack. Her father said she was "doing OK," but he declined to elaborate on her condition.

Erin Baldwin, 20, pleaded guilty to first-degree assault and was sentenced to four years in prison and four years probation

Seven other females were also charged in the attack. Charges against four of them were handled in juvenile court.

I'm totally confused here as to whose daughter was assaulted and why. Too many pronouns. At any rate, yeah, what the hell is wrong with these people? Beating a kid because of a kiss? Only consolation here is that, word is anyway, child abusers aren't given an easy time in prison.

I was just about to post the same thing. Jail time is definately deserved for this. But 30 years for two beatings (one incident)?

I read it like this. Two girls, a birthday girl and a guest, were involved the incident. The birthday girl's "boyfriend" kissed the guest on a dare. The mother of the birthday girl assaulted the guest girl for receiving the kiss.

There were more involved, but that is the main story.

That is completely insane. Beating a young girl into a coma over a kiss on the cheek at what sounds like a game of truth-or-dare?

In this case I disagree. That woman is a menace to society, just a matter of time before she kills or get someone killed. I think the judge is saving a life or two.

I'm from Baltimore. I remember reading about this when it happened 6-8 months ago. As I recall they hit the girl in the temple with the heel of a high heel shoe. Sick stuff.

I'd think it would have been better to have the woman receive a mental evaluation before the trial and base the sentencing on that. A 30 year prison sentence will cost the taxpayers one million+ dollars.

I think this happened near Edmonson Ave? I used to live near the area when it originally happened. And it doesn't surprise me something like this happened either... Too many parents around Baltimore City who think their children are pets. It's very common to see parents or guardians slapping, beating, cursing at the top of their lungs, and etc at their kids in plain public view. Very ghetto. They should prevent some of these animals from procreating.

This may be true and the mental eval isn't a bad idea but what price can you place on people's lives. this woman sanctioned, commissioned and orchestrated an attack on 2 little girls... Is she crazy? maybe? Is she dangerous to "normal" citizens? absolutely. Throw away the key.
