Yeah. Mouse lagging during HD access, and max transfer rate of 3.3MB/sec == HD is in PIO mode. Probably due to Windows detecting an error on it. (Check cabling, power, and use mfg diagnostics to scan for bad sectors. Also check System Event Log for error messages relating to the HD or IDE controller.)

In winxp theres only an option for DMA to be used "if available"... I cant make it use DMA can I?

I just flashed the bios, it now recognizes everything.. Still the same problem though...

NFS lags, UT99 lags, still lags when doing something with the hard drive...

If i put the OLD 40gig hard drive in with the NEW video card it DOESNT lag at all..... any ideas of what could be causing this?

I still think it's your graphics card drivers. Check and make sure that the eyecandy is disabled: Ansiotropic Filtering, Anti Aliasing, Quincunx ect.

I bet you have a feature turned on in the drivers on the new HD, but it's disabled on the drivers of the old HD.

Well, when i booted up the old hard drive with SP2 installed, it installed the radeon9200 pro family drivers, so I formatted the new hard drive again, with the fixed hard drive issue, and I used the same drivers as with the other hard drive, and its still slow, on other hard drive it was faster... :(

When the game is getting laggy, is the hard drive light blinking? When you're in the middle of a level, the hard drive light should not come on.

Also, are you overclocking the computer? I had a Celeron 366 that I overclocked for a while, but when I upgraded my hard drive, it became unstable and I had to revert it back to default speed to make it stable again.

Hard drive light goes nuts.

Ok, the problem is that the computer only has 256mb of ram. What is happening is that UT needs a lot of ram and so it has to use a swap file on the hard drive.
Are you using the same version of windows on both drives? XP w/ SP2 will take more memory than ME/98 or 2k. Also, are there other applications running in the taskbar tray or in the background? Assuming you're running XP, check how many processes are running when the system is idle. (It should be in the low 20s.) If you're using XP, you can disable the green/blue colors on the taskbar to save the space of the skin.

No, you can't *force* it into DMA mode. I would "Uninstall" the HD from Device Manager (if it is the boot drive, it will prompt you to reboot the system at that point - do so). After rebooting, the system should re-detect the HD fresh, and the registry will not have any error-counts listed for that drive anymore. You should be able to set it to "DMA if Available", and hopefully that will work. However, that also requires the system BIOS to program the chipset's IDE controllers properly for DMA mode, before Windows' boots.

You might want to clear your CMOS (make note of any important settings to re-program them if you do, like any custom onboard peripheral, CPU, and DRAM settings). Generally, with most modern BIOSes, any HDs connected to the chipset's onboard IDE controllers, should simply be left on "Auto". *If* there happens to be some sort of known issue with that HD, such that Windows' may be intentionally disabling DMA mode for that drive - you might be able to get away with manually setting your BIOS, to only allow Multi-Word DMA Mode 2 (16.6MB/sec max) for that IDE channel/device. How you do this depends on the BIOS, but one method is to disable UDMA entirely for that channel/device, which oftentimes allows the BIOS to fallback to MW DMA mode.

Whether or not UT lags due to lack of RAM is another issue, but the fact that you benchmarked your HD running at 3.3MB/sec, is proof that it is running in PIO mode, and that needs to be corrected, regardless. Once that is fixed, you can move on to seeing if perhaps you need more RAM too.

Btw, did you download the mfg's diag boot disks, for your HD, to test out the HD that was showing as running in PIO mode? If the HD has sector errors, and Windows' detects those during the process of trying to read those sectors, it will ratchet down the transfer rates to PIO mode every time, and you'll have to delete/uninstall the HD device out of Device Manager to reset it again.

Well I still dont get it. Same hardware, same config practically, just a different hard drive, and it doesnt lag with the 40 gig...
