WTF is wrong with my FX5900 ultra?

Since I've installed this card I've had nothing but problems. I formatted my computer, installed the drivers it came with, and it's still having major problems. I'm pretty sure the card is getting way too hot, and it's not the drivers or anything. I put the graphics settings on Medium, and then low for Asheron's Call 2, and it's still screwing up big time. To the point that you can't even play the game. My case is more than sufficiently cooled. I need a way to find out the temp or something. I am going to try other games, but this card blows sooo badly in my opinion. This is the post to end all debates..... Nvidia sucks huge ones, ATI all the way. Flame all you damn want. This card is horrible.

To be "fair and balanced," you can find posts just like this from new ATI 9800 Pro owners.

It seems some combinations of cards, systems, and/or users are just cursed!

Either that or your card is defective, which again happens with ATI cards as well.

Ya i wouldn't bail on nVidia just yet,

Can you loop 3dmark? Can you play any OTHER games?

If not, just get a RMA.

:D

so what exactly is the problem? Slow frame rates? Crashing? Visual artifacts?

The characters don't show up, the colors are wrong sometime, soooo many artifacts, this randomly float and fly around the screen.... it's like playing a game on drugs. I'm installing Counter-Strike and gunna try that. I checked the temp, and it says that it's only 45 degrees. So I don't know what's going on.

It's not OCed, and I'm using the drivers that came with the card, which are the newest drivers. Another thing just happened. I opened CS, I quit the program, and all of a sudden the screen changed to 800X600, the color changed, and according to the properties options, it thinks there aren't any drivers installed. I go to device manager, and there are drivers. Now I'm confused even more than before

Don't the latest NV drivers for the FX series actually show the temp? I've seen a couple people mention that.

under 10k in 3dmark2k1 I would tape that card to a brick and send it through nVidia's window. Or you could RMA it:)

Go ahead then and I say get yourself a Radeon9800pro since you pretty much said it right there.

If I ever get another card it definitely won't be Nvidia since it seems ATI is a a little bit cheaper, just as fast and has better image quality...

But if you can still RMA it I say return it and get that 9800pro

If not try another RMA because maybe you have a lemon...and maybe it is THAT hot

These cards have diodes on both the GPU and PCB to monitor GPU core temp and ambient temperatures respectively. They can be found by going to your display properties sheet. What brand card is this?

I have the PNY and installed it right over an ATi 9800 Pro install. I'll probably download a disk image from the library for this system so I don't have to re-load XP from scratch and start there with the reinstallation process because this card is slower than it should be IMO.

However, I haven't had ANY problems like you're experiencing. Is your AGP slot running at 66 MHz? Your AGP voltage should also be at 1.5V. Make SURE the power supply is sufficient! Does the fan speed up when you launch a 3D application? The fan should run its fastest whenever the computer is first turned on or whenever you reboot. If these things aren't ocurring, you definitely have a defective product. If your place of purchase was B&M, just exchange it for another.

Don't give up just yet! I've found that the 2D speed (geometry drawing especially) with these cards laughs at the ATi. Digital Vibrance makes the 2D image like it really should look. I gave the 9800 to my wife and when I look at her desktop it looks washed out! LOL. This *IS* a good product and there is a reason why it costs $500.
