I'm not sure, but these days, kids sure tend to be a bit nuts.

Actually, I'm sure people have always been nuts, they're just coming up with more creative ways to express it.

I had a house mate that told me she tortured animals as a kid and that doctors thought she was going to be a sociopath.

I kept my distance.

I'm glad the media has not been putting any of the recent school shootings on the front page (at least here).

When it is made to be such big news there always seems to be a lot of copy cats.

Normally, I hate this type of thread because kids will be kids but when I saw this headline on CNN, my first reaction was: "WTF is wrong with these kids."

clearly this is the result of violent movies and videogames. We should ban all entertainment that presents a violent image.

Clearly.

I don't really think it is though. It's a different world we live in now versus 20-30 years ago. Things change, people need to know the difference between reality and fiction. If they don't, I think they've got issues to begin with - not necessarily from the content they're exposed to. The majority of us have witnessed violence in the media and in video games, but we're not about go out and kill our families because we can kill people without consequence in a video game.

Either way, it's sad that happened.

Does this REALLY surprise anyone? REALLY?

You would think by now peoples inhumanity to one another is simply par for the course....it is with the advent of the internet and the speed at which information is passed along it seems as if this sort of thing is an everyday occurrence.

This type of thing has played out so many times it's not even funny, not only here but abroad. you only need to search Google to find more stories about children who kill their parents.

Nothing really should surprise anyone anymore.

It is not about video games, it is not about violent movies or TV....I can show many cases of kids killing parents before any of this type of medium existed.

It is about humanity and the fact is there are some people just born fvcked up....you can't change it and as long as we continue to procreate as a species...this kind of thing will continue to happen.

Hmm, let me think. Oh yes, it's because the kid is fvcked up.

Although the general consensus on ATOT is that parents in America fail. Hard.

btw, I do not subscribe to the statement i made. i like violent things. to ban any art based on its content is a severe violation of the First Amendment.

aka - original statement was sarcasm, for those who could not tell :p

yea I think parenting has been on a decline lately. I see it a lot. Funny though, all my friends turned out fine and their parents are all cool, for the most part. The ones that are a little weird have some strange parents. I already know how my future children will raised... pretty similarly to how my parents raised me and my sister. Had some fights but I respect them a lot more than I think they realize now, I've really matured in my feelings of respect and love for family.
what really helped was I had a normal household, quite fitting of the 'American' family.. mom and dad who never split, and was both their first marriage.. and one older sister.
Families are starting to get soft too it seems though. Kids really need to learn the whole punishment thing, our generation was kind of lacking of that. You can't hit your kid, oh no... they'll turn around and take it to protective services or whatever. You screw up, you deserve the punishment. I got off easy in my childhood for the most part, but feared my parents hands when I know I screwed up. Just got a general hand to the ass, it worked. I turned out alright. :)

..well for a few generations now, parents have adopted the "buddy" concept rather then truly supervise growing children. Then there's another bunch that just dump their kids in child care joints. Reap what you sow.

These days we just tend to hear about it more. I'm sure that this sort of thing's been happening for thousands of years.

I bolded these days not because I'm saying it's a problem only currently. The poster originally posted "this day" instead of "these days". I was being a smart ass.

Not really. There was one in Alberta several months ago, very similar. Daughter is forced to break up with BF, comes home with him and murders whole family. She was a minor, but still convicted as an adult and looking at 25 years I think.
