This has to be singularly the most annoying thing about some older people. My mother, for instance, unplugs the f@(king coffee machine/toaster when she's not using it. WHY. GOD WHY?!

My father in law is here now. HE UNPLUGS THE SATELLITE RECEIVER AT NIGHT. GOD PLEASE TELL ME WHY. He also turns off my monitor every night, even though it powers off after 20 min.

Hell im only 27 and I do it. Unplug anything not in use unless its in a power strip, in which case I just shut the power strip off. The only power strips that don't get shut off is the tv/home theatre system, and the A/C's.

What in hell for?! The thing about a toaster at least is it works when you plug it back in, but with a sat receiver, you need to wait a minute for it to fully power up.

When you are older, that minute for it to warm up is quite tolerable.

I do know several people that have had lightning issues with their dishes...

I concur. I'll go a step further and ask what is with old people and their obsession over paper shredders? Anyone who has ever worked retail knows exactly what I am talking about.

My wife has that annoying habit, at least when it comes to turning off lights. It drives me nuts, especially if I only left the room for a minute or two to get something to drink or use the bathroom

That at least saves electricity. I do it all the time. My roommate turns all the lights on as he moves around the place, I turn them all off.

well actualy unplugging tvs, and nearly every other electrical appliance does in fact save electricity considerably over the coursse of a month, and a year. Because even when off, they still draw power.

the power is so insignificant that it would come out to less then a few bucks a year..

not worth the trouble.

Yeha I have no problem with this, though I don't do it.

When they unplug things that have a fvcking built-in clock it pisses me off though. That would have to be my rule for when you've stepped over the line!

I turn off my monitor every time I step away for long periods of time. I just hate it being on...

I have a more significant question-what is it about young people that causes them to refuse to acknowledge any electrical device has a funtional means to turn it off?

Your father has probably gone through 40+ years of walking around the house, turning off TVs in empty rooms, lights, etc. He could be doing it now to justify his existence.

He's probably also lost a few TVs, toasters, etc. to lightning-I have.

Ditto on the lightning. If you've had as many things ruined by lightning as I have (over the course of my long and otherwise boring life so far) and had to spend the $$ to replace stuff, you'd feel much more kindly towards unplugging.

And that "few bucks" you so easily throw out could feed an old person for a significant time.
