I'd wait until people see the movie before posting this. Cuz you figure, how many people who've seen the movie at this point read the book? It's my general experience that your average movie goers hasn't read all that much recreationally, probably cuz they've been takin in films.

Supposedly, Arwen has a bit part in the books (according to friend who's read the trilogy too many times). I read recreationally, but just never read the LoTR trilogy. I've read the Dragonlance novels and other fantasy, just not LoTR.
Methnks it's just the studio wanted whats-her-face to have a bigger part.

Yeah, but this is a very widely-read series of books. And I don't recall a heroine in the fellowship....

She sure as hell wasn't in the first book. Guess they just wanted to throw some female flesh up in front of us, but it's not hard for someone who's read the trilogy to figure out how she's going to play into it (hint: love interest). Don't expect too much of her.

Yeah she wasn't a very big role in the book but I guess Tolkien wrote a story on her that tied into the book. At least that's what Liv Tyler said on the Today Show or Good Morning America.

I've read it. But I'm just wondering, if this movie is supposedly truest possible to the book, why add characters?

I don't have the patience for a long explanation right now, but she's the daughter of Elrond. :)

Liv Tyler appeared on Conan one night and apparently still knows a lot of her lines in elvish tongue by heart, yet another fan apparently. I guess she has the looks and height to pull off an elf anyway. :)

bah, where's Kami to set all you people straight? :p
she IS from the book. And no, they are not adding her to the fellowship or anything like that. they are simply replacing the character who rescues the fellowship before they reach Rivendell (whose name eludes me at the moment). Keep in mind that the movies cost $300 million to make, and in order to appeal to a mainstream audience, a love story had to be added. If you purists would rather have the movie 100% loyal to the book, then it would most likely not make enough money to cover its losses

Glorfindel :)

I would have much preferred they add in something for the movie that could have happened behind the scenes in the book than change a part and yank out a cool character entirely.

Yah, I agree. Glorfindel is a badass, and should have stayed in.

if i remember the books do imply a love relationship between arwen and strider. i haven't seen the movie so i can't comment on the movies version of that romance, but from my reading, i felt that tolkien did put the spirit of a romance between those two even if it wasn't as explicit as some modern fiction.

hey, the movie always has some interpretive aspects from the book. it would be impossible to make the movie otherwise.

They exagerated her role in book #1 but I can assure you she is in the book. I am reading book one now and she plays a small part in Rivendell (not too much further through yet).

Like I said... I know she is not just some made-up character. But she does NOT play any real role whatsoever in the first book. And I agree, it's a shame to ditch Glorfindel. Whatever.

She had a relatively small role in the book, but her role has been exaggerated for the film. If I recall correctly, she replaces Glorfindel in the first book and Eowyn in the latter books.

She better not replace Eowyn :|

That'd be a FAR bigger change than the Glorfindel thing.

Damnit! Add some scenes that never happened, but don't replace things! Nooo, Eowyn, come back!!

KokomoGST. Have you read George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series? If not, you're missing out.

Arwyn replacing Eowyn!!

No...I guess they really need some T&A....

But Glorfindel and Eowyn getting bumped....

Though she is Elrond's Daughter and I believe she becomes Aragorn's wife at the end of "The Return of the King" Does she not?

Oh nooo!!!! Please don't turn this into a Song of Fire and Ice vs Lord of the Rings...

Can't Decide!!!

BRAIN IS MELTING!!!!

No no must stay on topic...this is about a new cool movie. Not about which of the two best series ever is the *the* best...heheeh :D

She does, and upon further investigation someone is cast in the role of Eowyn so I assume Arwen is not taking her place. :)

I just checked theonering.net which says Eowyn is played by Miranda Otto, so maybe not. Although I thought I did read somewhere that Arwen's role was going to be expanded to provide a stronger feminine influence in the films, hopefully she won't replace Eowyn.
