If I choose anything except windows boot manager in BIOS and try to boot it tells me that it is an invalid disk
I am trying to boot from a recovery disc that I made so I can restore a windows image.
I am running win7

When the computer first boots; start tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options screen appears, and then select "Repair Your Computer". Select keyboard, then click Next (if necessary, log on at the System Recovery Options log on prompt). At the System Recovery Options dialog; click "System Image Recovery". A prompt will open, telling you "Windows cannot find a system image on this computer"; click Cancel and then click Next. At the "Re-image your computer" dialog; insert the last DVD from the system image backup, then click Next to begin re-imaging the computer.

Edit: Maybe I misread what you mean by a "recovery disc" (I replied thinking you had created a backup image on DVDs and were trying to boot from that); but accessing the Advanced Options and selecting Repair Your Computer gives you the same recover tools that booting from a recovery disk gives you. So if you already have a system image backup on the HDD (that you created earlier) you won't see the "Windows cannot find a system image on this computer " message. Windows will detect the image and restore it.

no I want to boot from dvd I plan to have more than one os on the computer so it has to be capable of booting from the dvd

What mobo are you running? If you say you're accessing the boot menu and can't select the boot device (DVD), then the settings for the BIOS boot order must be configured incorrectly.

I am using ASRock z79 extreme
And when I tell the bios to boot from dvd even if I have the windows dvd in it tells me that it's an invalid disc I can select what to boot from but if I choose anything other that windows boot manager it does this

Make sure your DVD drive is plugged into the Intel SATA ports and not the Marvell ones (I believe only 2 of them run on the Intel chip).

I run an ASRock Z77 Extreme9, which uses the same basic UEFI BIOS as your Z79. On the Boot configuration screen in the BIOS (at the top of the screen) is the heading Boot Option Priorities under which (in white letters) are Boot Option #1, and Boot Option #2. Leave these alone for now.

Below that are two addional headings: "Boot Hard Drive BBS Priorities" which must list your Windows system drive as Boot Option #1, and "CD/DVD ROM Drive BBS Priorities" which must list your DVD drive as Boot Option #1.

When you have those two configured; check that Boot Option #1 (under Boot Option Priorities) matches your system drive in "Boot Hard Drive BBS Priorities", and Boot Option #2 (under Boot Option Priorities) matches your DVD drive in "CD/DVD ROM Drive BBS Priorities".

Don't be confused that your DVD drive is Boot Option #1 under CD/DVD ROM Drive BBS Priorities, but it's Boot Option #2 under Boot Option Priorities; that's how it should be set. Press F10 to save and exit, then press F11 to access the boot menu and test if you can now select your DVD drive to boot from.
