[rant on] These people that have 3 names, like Courtney Cox Arquette, or Catherine Zeta Jones. etc. I can understand celebs and the like having these kinds of pretentious monikers, but regular people? Like some fat-assed housefrau in Queens? Who do they think they are? Like taking 3 names is going to elevate them above everyone else, and make them better. Just pisses me off. If you're not famous in any way, then knock it off. If you are famous, then you're just a self absorbed ass. [rant off]

For some reason Catholics decided they had to stand out and needed 185619764871 names for that.

A woman wanting to keep her maiden name ok, but why the sh*tload of names for Catholics? Not like the lord told them to name their kids after every saint they'd make up.

I bet you take it, and I do have a middle name, but I do not see the need to use it. As for Cox-Arquette being hyphenated, whatever, but even she can't decide which way she wants it...

From IMDB.com : Friends beauty Courteney Cox Arquette is requesting to be called by her maiden name - fuelling rumors that her marriage to actor David Arquette is in trouble. The couple, who met on the set of Wes Craven's hit film Scream, have confessed to attending marriage guidance counseling and there have been reports that their relationship was under strain. However, those close to the sexy actress insist that her relationship with the Eight-Legged Freaks actor remains strong. Her spokeswoman says, "That's completely untrue. She vacillates between Courteney Cox and Courteney Cox Arquette." A source close to the couple adds, "She just wants to be known as Courteney Cox again. She insists it's just out of respect to her family that she wants to use the name she grew up with."

I see nothing wrong with using 3 names. But 4 is too many, IMHO. If you have 4 names, you should abbreviate some of em, like J.R.R. Tolkien did.

A lot of times, when you hear someone indentified by their full name such as John Wilkes Booth or Lee Harvey Oswald, this is to identify somone by their full name so that others with that name are not unduly implicated or misidentified as the suspect. The media does this most of the time i.e. Richard Allen Davis or John Wayne Gacy but not always.
