WTF is up with AMD's OEM packaging?

bamacre

Lifer
I ordered three oem A64 3000's from outpost.com, and two out of the three had bent pins.

Outpost.com was great, over-nighted me two more as replacements. But both cpu's also had bent pins. Called outpost, got two more in the next day. Again, both had bent pins. AGHHHH!

So now I await 2 more cpu's. Six out of seven damaged before I got them. Outpost is blaming AMD, and I don't blame them, the POS little plastic case that these come in are horrible. As someone who has been using Intel for years, I'm initially not very happy about using AMD. Although I have to admit, I have never purchased an oem Intel cpu, and never purchased a retail AMD cpu.

Do they package all their oem cpu's the same?

Update PICTAR!
This is how I am receiving them.

I have recieved 10-15 Athlon64's as OEM (none from outpost) They come in different packaging depending on the company that ships the OEM, so I DON'T think its AMD's fault. Never had a bent pin either.

The ones we've had at work have come in hard plastic trays. (No idea if thats how AMD ship them)
As long as they're kept in these trays then the pins are protected and don't get bent.

Once they're sent out individually, then its up to us to keep them protected by giving them sufficient protective packaging.

Updated OP with pic.

Well outpost is going to decide if they can can afford to send me retail 3000's to replace these, or even 3200's. That'll work for me, I guess. Just damn frustrating having three rma #'s now for the one inital order.

this is why you order from newegg.com. outpost.com really sucks and is known to suck.

I'll take a pic of what I get when I order from ?? (can;t remember the last place I got one, and thats the only container left lying around)

Well, I work on the supply side of my business and I fault outpost. If one of my customers required that many shipments, I would go out and make sure that the product was good before shipping out any more. Dumb suppliers don't realize they're only helping the competition.

EDIT: Are they not checking them when receiving the chips? Amazing how the chain breaks down for outpost and they blame someone else. Also, that is the way outpost chooses to ship them.

Exactly, it's VERY unlikely I will ever buy an oem cpu from outpost again. I've ordered from them before, quite a few times, and never head a problem like this.

So you guys think this is outpost's fault? This is the way they decided to ship them? Not AMD?

its outpost liability, not amd, i've worked as a shipper, you'd have to be pretty imcompetant to accept bent chips, when we accepted stuff we always checked it out since its our ass on the line

The boxed x2s come in a pretty similar plastic case, the main differences being that the pins fit into a hole in the case shaped around them, and are sunk into a piece of foam. I can't think why AMD would make a different type of case to put OEM cpus in, it's not like it would be any cheaper to make it a different shape.

My guess would be AMD ships them in some kind of bulk packaging and Outpost is providing the plastic cases you are getting them in.

yeah my retail 3000+ came in the green foam thing and a clear plastic bracket like he had in his picture

i remember i bought an xp-m from ebay, it came in electrostatic paper, wasn't damaged, i dunno what outpost is doing, packaging is dirt cheap, we used to go crazy wrapping stuff up

Hehe! Should have at least tried them. Back in the day, we were getting OEN P4 Northwoods from Outpost, and it seemed the more bent pins they had, they better clockers they were. I remember spending about an hour once just bending the pins back. I probably received 15 CPU's with bent pins. Most clocked good, some did not. I only exchanged a couple of them. The rest I kept for awhil and then sold. You should ahve at least tried them!

My processor was retail, inside it also came in that kind of little container but it was situated on a peice of foam like in the X2 picture above.

Yes, same with me. I think after the 2nd time of replacing them, I'd ask for my money back. At least you're patient, but you deserve something free out of this one...

Well, I would normally ask for money back in a situation like this, but they are going in systems to be sold, and I cannot budget any more $$ into these systems.

I HOPE they come back and offer me 3200's as replacements.

I'd have them check to make sure the ones they ship out to you next are not bent. I almost always buy OEM chips, since they're usually cheaper and I always opt for my own cooling anyway...never had an issue with bent pins. My little plastic container has always had foam in it to protect the pins of the CPU. I'm assuming it's Outpost's problem, since I've had no problem with Newegg, ZZF, or Monarch.

Yeah, I asked that of them the second time around. The guy I talked to today even saw the special note which the warehouse ignored obviously.

Every OEM cpu I haven't gotten has always had the foam to protect the pins, if outpost isn't using the foam it's there fault. Even chips I've gotten off of ebay have the foam.

Whenever I've ordered an OEM cpu in the past it has always been very well packaged. Always nestled in an Anti static foam. As for retail I have never had problems with either AMD's or Intel's packaging.
