It depends. Now is the busiest shipping time. So, for every prime shopper that orders something, it shoves a non prime shopper further down the que...unless that order is approaching its guaranteed shipment day.
They're quoting 5-8 days on FSSS, and often meet or beat the estimate. According to their SEC filings, they spend hundreds of millions of dollars on free shipping. Why should an advertised 5-8 days become 2-3 days just because they're so efficient? sygyzy mentioned that actually does happen if you're close to an Amazon DC.

I forgot to mention there was a recent ATOT thread that actually praised delayed FSSS. The writer was glad he was able to cancel impulse purchases before they were ready to ship.

With the Amazon app on my Windows Phone and Amazon Prime I impulse by like a motherfucker. Something pops into my head, I type it into the app, read a few reviews and click the one click buy button. It arrives 1-2 days later.

The ones that really get me are the subscribe and save items. I always poorly estimate the shipping intervals and end up with 400 blue toilet disks or extra bags of protein powder.

I do a good deal of ordering for work through my Amazon account, which has prime. Once, I made the mistake of using my own CC and mailing address to purchase a big ass printer.

I was on the phone with Amazon CSR within 40 seconds to fix the order, but she said that it had already been processed through shipping and would be on the dock and ready to go within the hour.

lol at OP.

Yep, that's the worst thing aboot prime shipping. You gotta be 100% certain all parameters are correct, because it's rare changes can be made after the place my order button is clicked. I'm glad the package refuse option exists, cause it has saved my ass.

I routinely cancel and rejoin on sub & save items. No problems doing that.

You can just change your interval. I'm a little torn on whether it's right or wrong to "subscribe and save" to get one order for a cheap price, then cancel the subscription. Feels like gaming the system.

We all understand how it works. To some, it is just ludicrous that they purposely delay/put off the actual shipment just because they did not have prime.

yup, i understand the prime people get the special 2 day shipping from the carrier.
what i don't get is why mine has to be sitting in the warehouse for 7 days now before even being picked up by the carrier.

I thought it was just me. I ordered a set of toner on Monday and it still hasn't shipped...I guess the holiday rush is killing them. Usually stuff is out the same or next day.

I'm pretty sure there are thousands of seasonal employees to help prepare items during this time of year. Every order is unique.

I ordered two Otterbox cases Tuesday night at 10:29. They delivered today at 2:30. Two day Prime.

Another Prime member here. I don't even pay for it. My mom just writes a check every year to me for $79 for my Christmas gift :)

That's all I ask for from my parents.

I didn't know about the the streaming. That makes it a little more palatable.

But I'm pretty cynical about these things. I don't want to be forced to buy it to get decent service, and I'll never order from Amazon enough to make it worthwhile for me. Most years I don't even order $80 worth of stuff.

One recent order shipped almost immediately but was held for a few days (3 or 4, I think) at the second location for no reason I could see (other than me being penalized for not using prime). And to make matters more frustrating - the location was St. Louis, which is only a few hours from wher I live.

How is that Amazon's fault? Did their non-Prime customer anti-service division call the post office and tell them to hold your package?

Cool story...I guess.

Where did I say that "everyone else offers 2 day shipping for free?"
You didn't directly, but you said that 90% of sellers you deal with on eBay have the same level of service as Amazon Prime. I don't recall 90% of eBay sellers offering free 2 day shipping (or overnight / same day delivery for $3.99). Maybe your eBay is more awesome than mine.

Your order doesn't happen in a vacuum. There's other people making orders, and by taking the free shipping you're agreeing to have your order take less priority. They aren't purposely delaying it just to spite you. They're delaying it so they can send out other higher priority orders.

I absolutely love the service. This year they've been particularly good to me. I've had three orders that actually came in later than the 2 days promised (and beyond the overnight order on one order.)

I wasn't upset, but did share the experience with Amazon CSR. All told, they've offered me enough compensation for the trouble -- which really wasn't, and i was keen on emphasizing that i was not upset at all! -- to pay for about 90% of this years dues.

:)

Easy...90% of the sellers I deal with on Ebay.

your claiming that 90% of ebay sellers give you free 2nd day shipping , instant streaming of thousands of movies and TV shows and instant access to thousands of kindle books? :whiste::whiste::whiste:

as a student I got this all for free for 1 year. Now I pay just 39.99 a year. I can't imagine the numbers work out the same with ebay and I know you don't get the additional perks. If i order 1 item a month it pays for itself at 2 items per month it is only $1.66 per item. Where on ebay do they offer such a deal regardless of item size and weight and location?

your full of shit.

Amazon artificially inflates their processing time unless you upgrade shipping or buy Prime. They are assholes. Pay $80 for them to ship it out as fast as their competitors? But I get to watch a handfull of shitty movies too? Sign me up!!!!

Yeah, but it needs to be repeated every time some yahoo complains their order is late.

Funny stuff. It's a conspiracy...

For all (dozens) of the orders I've placed with Newegg, they haven't been shipped my stuff the same day as the order if I chose free or discounted shipping. Probably just me, though!

Like Eos said, it's a conspiracy. Therefor all proof has been destroyed by the conspirators.

Seriously though, every amazon order I have made in the last few years always takes at a minimum of 3 days to "process". Every order. So...

It's not uncommon for Amazon to hold my packages for a day even though I'm an Amazon Prime member. I assume it's because they realize that they state 2-day shipping, and given the fact that I'm so close to the warehouse, they can wait a day and still meet their stated goal. I believe the last time this happened, I ordered a product on Saturday and it didn't ship until Tuesday. However, I received it on Wednesday, which was their stated delivery date when selecting 2-day shipping.
