Sometimes drugs have long-term effects that may take 30 years to show up. There's no reasonable way to test every possible contigency on every drug, even with the thorough testing new drugs have to go through.

Thanks for the heads up, but I think I'll take my chances, since it's one headache remedy that seems to work for me.
CARDIOLOGISTS SAY THERE ARE TWO PROBLEMS WITH THESE ANTI-INFLAMMATORY DRUGS.

Dr. Ramin Oskoui, cardiologist: "These drugs independently will cause fluid and salt retention which can cause high blood pressure in varying degrees in various patients."

SECONDLY, IF TAKEN ON A REGULAR BASIS, DRUGS LIKE ALEVE TEND TO MAKE BLOOD PRESSURE MEDICATIONS SIGNIFICANTLY LESS EFFECTIVE. DOCTOR OSKOUI ISN'T PRESCRIBING VIOXX, CELEBREX OR BEXTRA ANYMORE AND IS WARNING HIS PATIENTS AGAINST INFLAMMATORY MEDICATIONS UNTIL WE KNOW MORE.
Wait, actually, I've been having pretty good luck with an Acetaminophen/Aspirin/Caffeine combination. Guess I'll just save the Aleve for swelling and the like.

I don't think Aleve has been on the market for 30 years. Also, this is a problem if you take it every day, not just as needed. So....your gf is fine.

EDIT: Yeah, I just found out, it was released in the mid 80's. But none-the-less it's been on the market for a while now. It's still ok to take, don't let the fear tactics scare you

I see what you were saying. Anyways, don't worry it's money. My mom was a chemist at the company that created the Aleve. She said it's fine as long as you aren't taking it excessively. Obviously it's a strong drug, if you take it for a few weeks straight you can cause some REpairable damage to your esophogus (sp?)

The warning issued says to FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS, not to discontinue use. The directions plainly say not to take for more than 10 days consecutively. So basically, don't take too much and don't take for too long. The heart disease being caused by naproxen was in a 3-year study to test for use in treating alzheimers. These were people taking it every day for 3 years.

I think that this has a lot to do with the fact that some of the drug companies have been caught with their pants down about covering up negative results for their drugs during clinical trials. Now the companies are scrambling to make the negative effects publicly available, so as to avoid a costly class action down the track.

So much pressure on the FDA to pass a drug to consumers b/c of the effect on theeconomy they don't have the time to really test out a drug.

A girl that I know that works in the pharm industry told me that the FDA is very VERY corrupt. Many of them will push through and approve drugs when they are slipped money under the table....usually around $500,000. The FDA seriously needs to be investigated.

On one hand you have all these effective drugs used in other countries that aren't approved for sale here because they need additional testing. Lots of pressure on the FDA and Drug companies to release them.

On the other you have all these effective drugs for sale that have side effects and long term risks because they weren't tested enough. Lots of pressure on the FDA and Drug companies because they won't release them.

While I don't like the idea that I may have/had an increased risk of heart attack after taking vioxx for a few days a few years ago, I wanted/needed it for a back problem I was having. Tylenol and other OTC meds weren't cutting it and the doctor gave me some. I didn't even use all of it (only 2-3days) but it did the trick. Then you have other folks who used it day in / out for a long time and some are fine and maybe some aren't. If you take any drug that long there's bound to be some consequence but you have to balance that yourself as to what's more important.

Problem is people want to blame others for their problems. Well, and some companies aren't forthcoming with their research... but I still think it's a moderation issue.
