Whenever I start my computer, XP Pro loads and goes through all the startup stuff. Then a random DOS prompt window pops up with a command, and shuts down my PC. I have no idea what it is, but I've sweeped my pc about a thousand times and nothing has popped up. Any idea?

Download and run hijackthis. Most likely it is spyware related of some sort. Post the hijack log here if you unsure of what to do.

Boot into safe mode if you cannot do this in normal booting.

what are you "sweeping" with? make sure your defs are updated... also scan with more than anti-virus software.... scan with ad-removing software...

all else fails.... a format and reinstall only takes like a couple hours

Any ideas about whats goin on. If you need any help on the system just ask or look in the sig. Thanks

I'm no stranger to reformatting, but I would like to refrain from that if I can.

I see a LOT of crap on the system.

Go to Start/Run and type MSCONFIG.

Navigate thru the tabs. At the SERVICES tab hide all non-MS services, then disable everything. At the rightmost tab, uncheck everything. Reboot. Can you log in now?

If no, you can go into regedt32 and remove the malware from within safe mode fairly easily; let me know if that's required.

Your virus and malware scanners aren't doing their jobs. Just in a quick peek I see a lot of unrecognized junk. I suggest downloading and installing the Microsoft antispyware tool; see my sig for the URL.

For example, what IS all this stuff?
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ZStart] C:\windows\system32\rsdxrego.exe run32
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SysStart] C:\WINDOWS\system32\tsysuqd8.exe run32
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Drivers] C:\Windows\Drivers.bat
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ap9h4qmo] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ap9h4qmo.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [nqrrhs] c:\windows\system32\vygmem.exe

I'd get rid of it....

Definately a lot of spyware in there. Be aware that you MUST run an anti-spyware tool from Safe Mode on that badly infected a system or you're wasting your time. Also, if you don't remove all malicious BHO Helper objects, you'll only re-infect yourself when you open an Windows Explorer or IE window.

Please refer to my detailed spyware removal instructions here: http://theflyingpenguin.com/spyware-removal.shtml

Hope this helps...

FP and dclive are correct. You've got some garbage:

ap9h4qmo.exe - ShopAtHomeSelect Spyware
Bolger.dll - parasite
svcproc.exe - Aurora?

The following indicates you have a stealth worm on your system that can randomly generate EXE names:
rsdxrego.exe
dfstnt.exe
tsysuqd8.exe
nssFAA.dll
nnahde.exe
vygmem.exe

Beyond the software removal solutions, you may need to do some surgery on your registry as well. Removing these objects may just get regenerated with a random EXE from something in the registry loading it up.

Well, I went back and used MSCONFIG and determined that it was a startup program that was popping up and shutting the PC down.

Slugbait, what would be the best way to perform surgery, and would I eliminate some of my problems by getting a firewall.

I can build a computer and understand how everything works, but when it comes to most software, I am lost, so please help. Thanks

Best of all would be to Drop The Bomb On It with a fresh reformatting and installation of Windows. I made some guidelines to help people stay secure during & after: during and after

Microsoft AntiSpyware combined with a router (hardware firewall), a software firewall, and a current-generation antivirus software, would be a good start. The resources page has links to those, including some antivirus trialware. Not using an Administrator-class account when you don't need to is also a powerful safeguard, although it does have its drawbacks at times.

Just from looking it looks a lot shorter. The Registry cleaner said somewhere along 160 problems :( . I currently have Symantec Antivirus Client. Any good? I have a Linksys router for the cable. What would be teh best software firewall out there?

ROGUE: please read my detailed spyware removal I linked above. I do this for a living.

Unless you have something EXTREMELY nasty, my procedure should leave you clean with a properly repaired registry.

If you still have problems afterwards you have one of a few VERY nasty spyware that can only be removed by a professional such as myself or, frankly, a format and clean install would be your best (and cheapest) option.

You won't eliminate problems by putting in the firewall now that you are already infected...although it will make you a bit safer. There are actually several different ways of attacking the registry to clean out the garbage. Knowing what you are looking for is the key, tho'...for example, let's start with Bolger: "BHO: BolgerObj Class - {302A3240-4805-4a34-97D7-1645A0B08410} - C:\WINDOWS\Bolger.dll".

Search the registry for that key (302A3240-4805-4a34-97D7-1645A0B08410) and then do a registry search of everything else you find in there...start wiping it all out, piece by piece. Note: sometimes what you delete will auto-repopulate, so you might need to keep looking for the parent key in the registry before you can truly wipe it out.

Finding out what caused the randomly generated EXEs...that might be a bit tougher. So considering how much is involved, this could cost you many hours, and you still might not be able to eradicate whatever it is that's plagued your machine. In this scenario, I'm leaning toward mechBgon's solution: start clean, and then use the tips to stay clean.

After doing a fresh install, do not connect to broadband without a firewall router, especially if you are not fully patched. Consider creating an Autopatcher CD with all the latest fixes before getting started...this CD will shave hours off your rebuild time. Make any OS customizations you always prefer, ("Show all files", "Show Status Bar", etc) and then image the harddrive and archive it to DVD...by creating an image, you can quickly restore your clean image again should you run into the same problems, saving many hours of rebuilding it yet again.

Good luck

C:\WINDOWS\system32\tsysuqd8.exe ... and other lines show you're still infected. MS's antispyware doesn't pick up any more? It can be run multiple times.
