I just noticed this little pimple like thing growing on the side of one of my fish. Does anyone know what it could be? Anything I can do about it? My wife does not want Sleepy to die (even though secretly I've always hated him! :D ) :(

Why so blurry?

Are you trying to hide the fish's true identity or something? ;)

Try cleaning out the tank really well (with bleach, but RINSE WELL afterwards) and putting some of that fish medicine in a bottle you get at a pet store.

Go to your local petstore. Check out Myracine 2 or coppersafe. They have tons of medication that covers pretty much everything thats curable.

WATER CHANGE!!!

20 % every day for 2 weeks minimum.

IIRC that's a bacterial infection if it's as large as it looks. The only real treatment you can offer that won't screw up the rest of the tank is Tetra medicated food. It has penicillin in it and getting the antibiotic into the food is the best way to treat bacterial infections. Dumping penicillin into the tank will kill off your good bacteria that turns fish poop into nitrates that are nearly harmless to your fish. That will cause a buildup of ammonia and kill of all your fish.

I could be wrong since it's been a while since I was in the fish biz, but I don't think so.

Ideally you would take "Sleepy" out of that tank and put him into a tank set up just for him to get better in.

BTW: The water changes are to protect the rest of your fish and to provide a more ideal environment for the recuperation of Sleepy.

Ack! Please don't unless Sleepy is the ONLY fish in your tank!

That would be ich. My girlfriend knows lots about fish, and she verified this...she says you'd better treat it fast, because that breed of fish will die very quickly.

Every fish in our entire 55 gallon salt water tank had ich for a while (ich occurs in both fresh and salt water tanks). It was a long battle, but we conquered the ich. However, it got one of our fish. Our clowns, tang, and everything else survived :)

You need to get some anti-ich medicine, and then use Melafix afterwards (available at Wal-Mart). It can take weeks to fix.

Why would you want to do that? That would ruin the habitat. It's not nearly as important in fresh water aquariums as it is in salt water setups, but there are some very important bacteria in the tanks that break down ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates. It's all natural, but takes much time to establish. If you clean a tank, it must re-cycle in order to re-establish the bacteria cycle. This puts a lot of stress on the fish even thought the tank sometimes looks better. High ammonia/nitrite/nitrate levels can kill your fish, and it's almost impossible for a cycling tank to not experience that. Anyway, I wouldn't advise "cleaning" the tank. Ich lives on the fish, and cleaning the tank wouldn't make the ich leave the fish's body. Treat the tank with meds...

That's what I was assuming, but you're right, he didn't say...

unless his digital camera is set to a fast iso and has good lighting, his pictures will be blurry. many fish don't stay stationary very long.

Don't think its ICH but I miht be wrong. Ich is alot of smaller spots usually starting on the fins and they usually are not protuding like that.

I thought it was ich too when I saw it. Ich does usually manifest itself as lots of smaller white spots, but it still could be that. If not, chances are it's some other form of infection/virus/thingy.
