last night, around 10:15 the people above us started to pound on the floor again (most likely trying to tell us to STFU). my roomie was in his room playing vids, listening to music, with the door closed. i was out in the living room watching tv (at a low volume) and talking with the lady friend (yes.. we actually were talking). neither of us were able to hear the music, his door is probably 15 feet from where we were sitting, and probably another 20-25' from his door to where his pc is. how are the people above us able to hear that music, when i couldn't even hear it in my own apt.

this isn't the first time that there has been a problem here. about 3 weeks ago we go a 'noise voilation' from the apt. managers saying that they we were disturbing the other residens with our 'pounding bass'. (the speakers that my roomie has are logitech z340's.. hardly pouding bass, and at the time of the first incident they were cheap ass logitech speakers with no sub.) about 3 days before we got that letter they had been pounding on the floor again.

by no means have we been loud. even the neighbors across the hall from us have said how supprised they were on how quiet we have been. but then we have these bast!rds above us :| and it's not like they don't make noise. every morning we hear them get up, take their showers, fvck around in the kitchen and pretty much hear every footstep they make, yet we arn't being assh0les and telling management about them. :| (note these people are a single couple in late 20's early 30's).

we (the roommates and myself) have decided to go up there tonight when we are all done with class and let them know they are fvcking insane (well.. not like that) but we plan on explaining that it is impossible for them to be able to here us, when we hardly make noise, and even if they do, how can they prove that it's coming from below... and not above or from the ajacent apt. if they decide to be dicks again, well simply explain that we can hear every move they make and it's very disturbing in the morning while we are trying to sleep, and plan on reporting them to housing management.

thoughts? suggestions? comments? i'm sick of having to worry about living in my own apt. people like this need to loosen up a bit. 1015? seriously. :|

edit: just got off the phone with the apt. management and the lady that i spoke with said that they haven't heard any more complaints from them, and suggested that the noise was coming from somewhere else. she said that she was going to speak with them and ask exactly what is the problem is and the noises that they claim to be hearing, and would call me back before 5pm tomorrow. she then assured me that we would not be evicted for complaints made against us when we arnt doing anything wrong. (ie; listeing to music at a reasonable level)

ether way, i'm still going up there tonight when i get home.. and plan of giving them my phone number so they can call us and tell us to be quiet instead of banging on the ceiling.

turn on your music and stuff like you had it when they complained, then go up there and hear for yourself how loud it is.

some people just suck....

we had someone like that once, but they would never give us any warning...living above us....

after we got a noise comlpaint from the landlord, and we had just been watching a movie, we left a note for the people above us asking to please call us if they ever hear another problem and we would stop immediatly, but it was hard for us to tell if we were being to loud.

we apologized and even left them a $50 gift certificate to a restaurant in town taht we had since we felt bad since we supposedly woke them up really late at night...

well a month later i had some friends over to do some HW and we were working on it till like 4 am...there were about 6 of us, but we were doing work, not partying or anythign and 2 days later we got a noise complaint again...

bastards...we got kicked out of that building when our lease was up

I use to live in a top floor apartment and we could hear everything from the people below us. They weren't loud or anything, it is very common for the sound to carry up into the apartment above.

If they have a problem with you talking and carrying on as normal then maybe they should seek a different place to live.

1 year lease :(

that is what i was thinking, but i'm not exactly sure how well that idea would go over with these asshats.

well think about it, theres only what, a foot of ceiling between u and your above neighbor. of course sound is gonna travel up there easier than across the apartment from the bedroom to the living room.

true. but they don't have to be assh0les about it.

edit: i can hear every move that they make, yet i don't call and complain to management about it. ..

on second thought i'm going to call them right now, just incase the people above did call today... i really don't need to be evicted from a 900/month lease.

File a complaint against them for always pounding on the floor. :D

You should just go up there and listen to how loud it actually is. If they can here you talking then there is nothing you can do about it. They moved to a top floor apartment and will have to live with it. Otherwise you are going to have to live with asshole neighbors for the next year. Remember to complain as much as they do if not more.

If sounds are traveling so well through the floor that you can hear them talking and walking around, sound from your place probably goes up into their place pretty easily, too.

In short, when a building is built with no consideration for sound propogation between rooms and floors, it sucks

we cant hear them talking... but moving chairs around on the kitchen floor, they are constantly throwing things around on the floor, and their damn washer and dryer is louder than all hell.. especially when they do laundry at 9am on a saturday morning (wouldn't have a problem with this if i haden't gone to bed two hours prior :p)

Does your roomate like to listen with the Bass all the way up?

Bass sounds tend to travel farther then treble sounds.

Ceiling? I thought they lived above you?

Do the apts have hardwood floors? Are the speakers mounted on the wall, or are they placed on a desk? Putting a little thought into how a compression (sound) wave propagates you could eliminate quite a bit of the problem.

I had a similar situation, I would be watching TV with the volume down so much that I can barely hear it, yet my neighbors come knocking telling me my TV is too loud. I'm like WTF? I can barely hear it myself! So anyways, I'm not sure if it made any difference, but I put my sub (because my TV speakers are disabled and I use my receiver for sound) somewhere else in the room (it was against the wall where the neighbors are). But they haven't complained since...

Also, same neighbors, I'd be playing CS quietly where you can barely here me from a room across mine, they complained about it. Funny thing is, my room isn't even touching their walls! But being a polite neighbor, I just tried to turn it down and such. I use headphones because of it now. It's so messed up. My old neighbors never complained once!

Is buying (or at least renting) a house out of the question. You can pretty much be as loud as you want when you're not sharing walls with neighbors. :D

lol, and you wonder why they complained. People who live apartments who use any kind of subs should be shot unless the walls are 2 feet thick and made out of concrete. That might not even be enough.

Has it occurred to you that since you can hear EVERYTHING going on upstairs, that your downstairs neighbors probably hear everything YOU do? It's not like your floor is magically sound-absorbent dude. Remember that 35' across carpet, through doors and walls is a lot farther for sound to travel than straight downwards through a few inches of floor. Just because you can't hear the bass doesn't mean it's not shaking the apt. below you.

Well, you are allowed to play your music till a certain time, depending on the city/county rules, so I'd freaking blast it until that time and tell them it'll be this way or the way it was before.
