I'm supposed to pick up some 'shortening' on my way home from work. What is this stuff used for and what does it look like? I guess it's for cooking.

vegetable shortening

A solid fat made from vegetable oils, such as soybean and cottonseed oil, which have been hydrogenated to create a solid. This process creates trans fatty acids which turns polyunsaturated fats into saturated fats. Vergetable shortening is virtually flavorless.
