It was not a natually-occuring substance on Krypton, it was produced in the planet's explosion.

Alternatively, in some mythos, it was produced in crust of the planet Krypton, which eventually lead to huge radiation plagues on the planet, and ultimately lead to a destabilized core, causing the planet to explode.

Superman is extremely vulnerable to it, because of the vast metabolism changes the yellow sun of earth caused in him. Super strength, super speed.. super vulnerability to low-level kryton radiation, as it were.

While my guilty pleasure is popular rap I do recognize that it's not very good, however there is some really really tight -ish being released on the underground and kinda-underground tip.
