Okay, first off, Panera is overpriced (but their french onion soup ain't terribad).

Second, what is it with sandwich shops using those damn spicy red onions? You know the ones I'm talking about - where you can have literally ONE single ring of onion on your sandwich and it literally overpowers the entire sandwich in terms of flavor.

I swear I pulled off about a quarter of an entire onion from my sandwich at lunch today, and still must have managed to leave just the smallest of slivers on my sandwich. Two hours later still all I can taste is onion. Seriously... use something like a sweet onion or something palatable for god's sake.

those spicy onions are great. I don't find their flavor to be overpowering unless it's like a whole onion.

That said, I avoid Panera. I would only go there if I wanted to drink a lot of coffee while eating a small snack. (small snack is between 500-1000 calories.)

I noticed that onions have different potency different time of the year.

At times they can be very mild and at times extremely spicy.

Regardless, I like onions.

I know not what you are speaking of.

Edit: if they are just normal red onions, I love them.

Red onions on sandwiches are phenomenal! That being said... Not all red onions are created equal. Sometimes, one is more potent than the next.

EDIT: Panera is damn good too. Sure, it might cost a bit more than other sandwich places, but the quality is definitely higher.

I don't like raw onions on salad or sandwiches. I pretty much only like onions if they are cooked (sautéed with butter/olive oil and garlic are amazing)

Used to was red onions were milder and tasted better. Supposed to be better for you health wise also but I never heard that before. Sorry but food today is garbage compared to how it used to be.

No doubt. We are not eating the same food we did just a few years ago.

And then we can't figure out why there are so many allergies and intolerance's to food nowadays.

I actually love those things, and always happy to found them :D

Another vote for red onions can have varying spiciness, especially lately. Red onions are supposed to be mild by nature.

Never heard of red onions being called spicy. Actually red onions like the others have said should be milder in flavor.

But yes sometimes they have a much stronger taste than others.

Love raw onions. I should invent an onion burger with raw onions, sauteed onions, onion rings, and shoestring onion crisps all on the same burger.

Red onions are good on a sandwich. :$

Sunny, if you want to see what spicy is, I could go to Firehouse again and douse my sub in Dave's Insanity Sauce. My friend and I were both crying... me because I was eating something rather hot, and him from laughter! :p

While red onions may sometimes be somewhat spicy...I've never had one that was overpowering. They're usually pretty sweet.

I pretty much loathe onion in general unless its sauteed or something. Then its delicious.
Raw onion on a sandwich is a straight up no no to me, just ruins it.

How is it crazy to acknowledge this? It doesn't take much research to know that food isn't grown, processed, prepared and consumed the same as it was a couple of decades ago.

Exactly what things have changed in the last couple decades that would result in red onions becoming more spicy? I.e., farmers breeding certain hot cultivars of red onions for their flavor does not count, as human-selected breeding has existed on the order of ten thousand years.
