WTF is it with all the gun threads lately?

ATOT used to be a place where you posted goofy news stories, asked odd-ball questions, and got bad advice about women. Now it's like walking into an NRA meeting. Every other post is "Check out my new gun" and "what's the best gun to keep on me so I can be a Clint-Eastwood-Hero if there's a robbery at a carry out?"

Is this the typical ATOT'er now?

Fat nerds holed up in basements tend to believe the world is out to get them.

Firearms are like cars, computers, skydiving or anything else like that...

They are mechanical, they are technical, in most cases they are aesethically pleasing. They are fun to shoot, fun to reload for, fun to pick out the 'right one just for you.' They also represent if not an investment of money, per se, they are certainly a valuable commodity. You can build one up from parts, or you can mod an existing one. It takes a certain amount of skill to use one properly.

You can also carry one to defend your life and property... can't do that with much else.

Once you get past the nonsensical 'Guns are evil' thing... there is a lot more to owning a firearm than meets the eye.

Sense. You're making it.

I agree.

Guns are tools, and should be respected but not feared.

At the same time, they aren't like other tools, because they are inherently designed to kill. It's not an incidental part of their operation, like a car or a hammer. It's what they are for.

I have little patience for hoplophobes. But at the same time, some of "gun worshipping" I see in places is also a bit weird. People go overboard, and it's not surprising that people get disturbed by it. If I saw a thread titled "OMG I love screwdrivers" I'd think that more than a bit odd, and I feel the same way about people who write "OMG I love guns" -- if not more so.

Zombies...

Although for those a .22LR firearm would be a very good choice. Light ammo, little recoil, relatively easy shot placement, able to do the job, relatively quiet.

Other people is what you'd generally require other calibers for.

Also Zombietools.net for situations that require you to be as quiet as possible.

I think it's the false sense of empowerment they get from them.

Yay guns. Ordered more ammo last night. Right, made to kill.

Lots of dead paper targets out there.

Right, made to kill.

Arguably that is what a large portion of firearms are designed for.

Why else would the military and police evaluate a firearm in terms of the ability to damage or incapacitate a human being?
Amongst other requirements.

Now, people also use firearms for hunting and target shooting (and there are guns designed explicitly for target shooting but any caliber can be lethal) and most hope that they never have to use their firearm for self-defense even if they acknowledge that it is a possibility.

Firearms make it exponentially easier to kill people than grabbing a knife or a hammer or a chainsaw.

The vast majority of people don't purchase firearms with the purpose of killing people in mind but it doesn't change the facts.

i want to get a mossberg mvp but don't have the cash right now.

thinking about putting an ad up on the local gun forum to see about trading some guns towards one.

I have an SKS that I don't really care for. It's ok, just not as cool/fun as i would have thought.

Also have a Walther P1 that I bought at the same time as the SKS. Shot a few rounds out of it and wasn't that impressed.

they're cool pieces of history but I just don't have any attachment to them and they're not really collectable, like say a Garand or 1911.

Assuming this is directed towards my thread with the OMG i love guns title...that was the first time i've been to a range and fired a gun. I had an awesome time. It's not like i'm some fucking psycho who cuddles with his gun every night. Maybe read the thread before making assumptions next time.

If this wasn't directed towards my thread, nm.

therefore we must fight back for our constitutional rights

and not yield to the retards out there who cannot look at statistics

I am reminded of this:

Judith: Here, I've got an idea. Suppose you agree that he
can't actually have babies, not having a womb, which is
nobody's
fault, not even the Romans', but that he can have the right
to have babies.
Rogers: Good idea, Judith. We shall fight the oppressors for
your right to have babies, brother. Sister! Sorry.
Reg: What's the point?
Rogers: What?
Reg: What's the point of fighting for his right to have
babies, when he can't have babies?
Rogers: It is symbolic of our struggle against oppression.
Reg: Symbolic of his struggle against reality.
I also find it ironic for someone whose username is "Pray to Jesus" would support the average joe owning firearms, because I bet that if Jesus was around today, he'd say, "You know, there'd be a lot less death in the world if everyone owned a gun!".

The only sane argument I've heard for not trying to ban gun ownership for the general American populace is that the genie has been let out the bottle, too many people have them and think it's some God-given right to be allowed access to a deadly weapon which has about one purpose, to kill people (aside from "practising to kill people" and "shooting animals because the supermarkets might suddenly disappear").

There are so many people in so many developed countries that don't think that they need access to firearms to defend themselves.

I enjoyed shooting when I was in the air cadets. When I have more money for hobbies I might sign up to membership at the local firing range, purely for my own enjoyment. I'm not sure why I would need one at home.

Well this latest shooting spree has now pushed me to get my CC. What you think of that?
