WTF is a "radio phone"

There is a way you can use ham radio to make phone calls. Maybe that?

Once upon a time it was the only type of mobile phone avaliable. It was a radio transciever that was serviced by repeaters that placed the actual POTS call out. To recieve a call, the POTS call was to the service and relayed out over the adjacent radio repeaters. It was expensive as I recall.

That was a long time ago so there could well be a more current definition.
