Huh? That doesen't make any sense. The guberment is happy to take your overpayment.

Most people overpay. Hence getting a refund.

You overpaid too much.

I know that sounds rediculous but you can't treat your federal taxes like a piggy bank. Hence the penalty.

WTF are you talking about? I take out 0 deductions (which takes the max out of your paycheck) which means I OVERPAY my taxes and get a refund each year.

Where did you come up with that BS logic?

forget the penalty.. I mean don't but move past that just for this minute and notice they charged you 48 dollars of interest because you gave them 29 dollars too much?

that's officially insane.

They subtracted the $29 from the penalty and added the interest.

#1, your math is wrong. The total amount you owe is the fine they assesed you MINUS your overpayment plus the interest.

#2. The fine is likely because you underpaid your taxes. If I'm not mistaken, if you owe more than $1,000.00 then they will fine you for underpayment.

he is actually right, but they don't penalize you for sums as pitiful as $29. They do penalize you if you withhold a large amount to much (several thousand, etc.)

Ok, I read the back and they said they fined me $190.21 for filing and paying late and $49.31 for paying late. This also baffles the hell out of me, well not as much as the line items listed on the 1st page. I don't even get how they fine my twice for supposedly paying late.

On the day taxes had to be mailed out (april 15th), I efiled using turbotax and my fed taxes got rejected and I was told I had until Oct 15 to refile which is what I did using h&r block online. I mailed the check to the irs on october 17th using the amount calulated by h&r blocks automated online tax service.

I think you get fined for underpaying the taxes by 20% or more, which he definitely did..
