Wtf? IE won't play MPEG or AVI?

For some reason if I click a link to an MPEG or AVI file, IE just gives an error screen ("the page cannot be displayed").

MPEG and AVI files are associated to Windows Media Player 6.4. Netscape does not have this problem...any ideas? I can't find a setting anywhere in the Internet Options which specifies file types.

Right click on the link and download the file instead. IE can't play MPEGs or AVIs on its own without the help of WMP anyway.

No, I know that. But what I don't understand is why isn't it launching Media Player automatically like it used to? (I'm not sure when it started doing this, but I sure remember it auto launching MP6.4 before!)

open up media player, go to options and find the select all formats button in there somewhere..

tell it to take control of those extensions again, basically.

sounds like netscape or quicktime or something took control of those formats.

No luck..didn't work. They were already selected in Media Player options.

Anyone else have any other ideas?

tmchow,

in that case, just reinstall MP6.4 and see what happen, it shouldn't take you long to reinstall!! good luck!!

Okay, I tried d/ling MP6.4 from Microsoft.com and the version for Win2k I downloaded won't install! It says "This version is not meant for Windows 2000. A compatible version will be released shortly" (or somethign like that).

wtf?
