Sounds like you've been afflicted with Microsoft Genuine Advantage. I read MS's FAQ on the thing and refused to install it. I may have a genuine copy but have no desire to prove it to MS.

Microsoft sent you a pirated copy of XP? 😕 If that's true, that's hilarious. 😀

BTW, thank you for using your S key. 🙂

Yeah, I got "infected" with that last update, screwed me royally!
Spent half the day just trying to get everything back to normal. (Unfortunately, for some reason I had System Restore turned off!)
Fortunately, I haven't gotten the "not genuine" message as of yet.

But, I did go to Add/Remove programs and the update is listed there (if you check "Show Updates"). I think I'll try and remove it sometime when I don't really need this machine for a while!

there. anyway, is this an oem computer? if not, if you had used the CD in more than one computer, that may happen, MS is getting very anal of getting people to validate for Genuine Windows now.

i get Dells instead of building rigs like i used to, and their OEM CD never fail me. but of course, i would have to install it on a Dell.

You still can. But eventually they may make it a requirement. IIRC.

Q: What is the Windows Genuine Advantage Notifications program?
A:
Windows Genuine Advantage Notifications is an opt-in program launched by Microsoft in select markets as part of its continued effort to combat counterfeiting and to create a better Windows experience for users of genuine Microsoft Windows software.

As part of the program, some customers in the U.S., U.K., Malaysia, Australia, and New Zealand will be invited to install WGA Notifications through Automatic Updates (AU) to confirm that they are running genuine Windows. Customers who are running genuine Windows and opt-in to the program will not see any messages. Customers who are using a non-genuine version of Windows will receive a message during logon that their copy of Windows appears to be non-genuine and will be directed to the WGA Web site to learn more. Users who choose not to obtain a copy of genuine Windows will receive periodic reminders. While the program is presently opt-in, as it expands later in the year, it may become a requirement for the AU service. Regardless of genuine status, users will not be denied access to critical security updates. Users who have not validated their computers as genuine, however, will not be able to install many updates, including Internet Explorer 7.0 and Windows Defender.

/me cheerfully validates all of his installs from the same code

What, doesn't everyone have their own, personal, legal volume license key for XP Pro?

No?

Man, you guys suck.

😀

I just use my 8-in-1 WinXP CD in everything. Remember, it's the key, not the CD, that determines if something is legit. That way I get to install an OEM copy, using the OEM key found on the computer, without having all the company-specific crap.
