WTF! I am getting charged for using e-file?!

WTF! I thought it's free! I am filing for both federal and state tax. The promotion on the irs site says free federal return, did not mention state tax return. Is that what I am getting charged for? Damn! $29 is a lot of money for something I was expecting to paid none!

state is not free...and which site did you go through to do the free efile? Most only give you free federal filing if you make under a certain amount per year...and its different depending on which site you used. I used H&R block and I filed federal for free since I made under $45k (was on co-op and worked 8 months)

I file in California. I am only getting $131 back from CA...the big chunk of $$ (nearly $1000) is from federal. There is always a catch to the supposely "free" service, isn't it?

eFile your taxes and get charged a fee, even though it costs the government nothing since it's all computerized.

Paper file your taxes for free, even though it costs the government to pay human employees to manually enter you data.

wtf?

Well, the servers need maintenance and the system needed to be programmed in the first place.

Still, it should be cheaper or free because of no paperwork. And heck, when you mail in your return, yeah, there's no fee for that.
Yell at your legislators? Pennsylvania has free e-Filing, and they actually encourage it.

Its not the government charging you, its those sites.

What site did you go to? I just got charged 10 bucks to do my California state return.
