WTF? How did I get spyware?

This is crazy. I never install anything, don't go to any website except for my banks, anandtech, espn, cnn and amazon. Well, just ran adware, and since the last run I have 1 process (WildTangent) running and 70 registry keys. The spyware is getting really smart lately... :(

Don't use winamp. I litterally use my home computer for purposes mentioned in my original post, nothing else.

Nope.

I have a stripped computer with minimal software installed. No Winamp. I install AOL Instant Messenger... and look at the startup key in my registry... and i see wild tangent. :frown:

More info

Both AOL's internet service software and AIM also install a piece of software called Wild Tangent, again without asking. Wild Tangent is used to play games and other multimedia. Some Winamp plugins also use it. The problem with Wild Tangent is that it installs an autoupdater and turns it on by default.

Wild Tangent's updater will transmit data about the computer on which it is installed. That data includes hardware specs, some information about installed software and how the user is interacting with the software. The company says this is done to see how their software is used and that they might share it with third parties. Several antispyware products detect and remove Wild Tangent.

Dunno if it's just firefox, but that site needs some serious help. Blocks of text stepping all over each other, some links just tossed on the bottom, using free graphics it appears with mismatched backgrounds.

Dunno if it's just firefox, but that site needs some serious help. Blocks of text stepping all over each other, some links just tossed on the bottom, using free graphics it appears with mismatched backgrounds.

its not firefoxes fault, its the fault of the coder for not making it browser compliant/friendly

Why should they bother. Code it for the most widely used browser and that's good enough. If some "leet" geek wants to use an alternative browser because he doesn't want to support M$, or some other stupid reason, that's their problem.

What you say is correct, from a self-centered, simplistic, sixth-grade point of view. Standards, however, exist for a reason; coding your website to specifically rely on bugs that exist in IE is not only very bad form, but can cause problems when your web traffic passes through proxies and other Layer 4/7 application switches that do load-balancing, caching, compression, etc..
