WTF happened to my TV? (updated)

All of a sudden there are blotches at the bottom of the screen.

Have you ever seen anything like this before?

This is a 4 year old CRT rear projection HDTV that I got from Costco, so I imagine it's covered under their old lifetime warranty. I can't imagine how this could have happened from abuse of any kind, but with two grandkids in the house anything is possible.

EDIT: is there a forum populated with a fair number of TV techs where I could ask this?

UPDATE: That night after I got the response at the tv repair forums I bumped my shoulder into the tv kinda good and the smudges changed around and then the next morning they were gone.

But, to be on the safe side I just got done opening up the case. I didn't really find anything so I'm going to assume the creepy crawly was alive and just taking a nap on the plastic surrounding the lens. I would think if it was on the lens itself it would have been fried.

I'd guess something is in the light path behind the screen?

I know spidey07 has CRT RP experience. AVSforum in general has experts to consult as well.

So, I asked the question on the tv-forums/tv equipment/tv repair forum and the consensus of opinion was that there is a dead spider on the lens.

😀😱😀

I'll crack open the case later today.

I'll file that away for future reference.
I've heard it's good to take these types apart for a cleaning periodically anyway.

You realize how important it is to come back and update this thread, right?

btw-I have camera lens cleaning stuff in the house. I know better than to scratch the lenses or the mirror.

Dust or contaminates in the fluid. Check the coolant level in each CRT. It sometimes leaks out or becomes contaminated and needs to be replaced. The CRT front is actually submerged in it to prevent heat buildup.
You can read about it more here , not for your specific brand but gives some good info.
