i found a page on Fortune.com

Almost one half of one percent of all Americans work at Wal-Mart--that's 1,383,000 people. No other FORTUNE 500 company even comes close; second-ranked McDonald's employs nearly 1 million fewer workers.

GM was #4 that year at ~365,000

anybody know someone that works in the corporate IT dept at Wal-Mart? i am wondering what kind of systems /apps handle that big of an personell dept!! :Q

That is pretty big.

Still, don't beat Wal-Mart within the US I dn't think (in terms of employees)

The largest employer in the United States is Wal-Mart (WMT, news, msgs). With 1.3 million "associates," the company employs three times as many people as General Motors (GM, news, msgs) (386,000). Indeed, Wal-Mart employs more than the next three largest employers -- General Motors, McDonald's (MCD, news, msgs)(364,000) and United Parcel Service (UPS, news, msgs) (359,000) -- combined. It also employs twice as many people as IBM (316,000) and GE (313,000) combined.

That being said, GM is big, huge as a matter of fact... pity they apparently have no money to pony up for a decent interior in almost all of their cars.

I think they may own some other non automotive companies as well, but can't remember.

They also have part of Isuzu and Fuji Heavy Equipment (parent company of Subaru), as I recall. They will be bringing out a new Saab based on the WRX platform, supposedly. They also bought out Daewoo in Korea as well...

And they own a chunk of Fiat Auto Group. There have been rumblings of GM buying outright the Fiat nameplate from Fiat Auto Group.

Yes, they own a huge number of car companies and nameplates.
 

Oh, I guess im getting old or something.
It at one time, was the big 4 I thought.

I understand that, but how the hell are they soo successful?? I mean why do consumers go there instead of Zellers, K-Mart, etc..?

I know Wal-Mart is relatively new in Canada (new as in 10-15yrs) and its HUGE..its pretty much stole customers from the competition. I can't understand how.
