WTF?! Facebook hi-jacking my Gmail???

Log-on to my email today to check it and I have an email from Facebook...some chick I dont know trying to "invite" me...anyways...in the list of people "I may know" in the email is a bunch of people from my Gmail chat list...which as far as I know is private information and cant be had simply by knowing my email address (which even that Im not sure how Facebook got).

This really just irks me the wrong way, something about this invasion of my personal and private information to try to scam me into joining a shitty social site...

So whats going on here? Is Google giving out information to Facebook or is Facebook doing something it isnt supposed to be doing?

They must get the info somehow, because that is the way they connect you when you sign up. I set up a facebook account, and when I did, it grabbed someone from a previous job who I had only emailed once with my gmail account. Then it linked me to everyone at that company listed in facebook, and showed me a "You Might Know" list. Now I'm linked to everyone at my previous job, and constantly getting requests to friend people from there.

I have never friended anyone on the account, I just set it up to test something, and I didn't put in any personal info (other than my first name), so there is no way for anyone to look me up.

I'm not sure why they do this same check with a random friend request sent to the wrong address though, but it doesn't surprise me.

BTW, instead of blaming Facebook, why not put the blame where it belongs - GMail. Yes, the email probably is from Facebook, but it's GMail that shared your info...

Yes, that's what they do. It even says so in Gmail's Privacy Policy, Google's Privacy Policy, Doubleclick's Privacy Policy, and Postini's Privacy Policy. Yes, they are all connected to one another.

Also, I didn't know there was an "Ad Cookie Opt-Out" option for Doubleclick, I just block Doubleclick entirely.

I understand that the info is readily available and can be extracted/shared between organizations (which is common for most sites), but facebook is responsible for using it in a way that throws you into groups without your permission. How many other sites do you know that use your gmail address list as a means to categorize users?
