Such a fuss about mp3pro, and then nothing?

Are there any commercially available encoders that go above 64kbps?

What about a plugin for winamp? I dont see any possible way mp3pro can survive unless winamp plays them.

Whats the deal?

Maybe that's why you don't hear about them anymore ?

There is one for Nero, it can encode at a maximum of 96kps, but still prefer Xing with High Variable Bit Rate encoder. Unlike the encoder that comes with nero that does VBR, this one reports the acutal time of the song and the bit rate at any particular time. The encoder though for Nero is I think $15.

oh yeah, and the latest version nero can burn mp3pro files.

It takes too much work to reencode all the songs to mp3pro from the cds. I think it'll take off if it's possible to convert the mp3 files to mp3pro without a loss of quality.

Stats for file size of Metallica's Ain't My Bitch

44.1 16 bit wav - 55.1MB
HVBR from Xing - 6.63MB
WMA 128kps from my Plextor Audio capture program - 4.67MB
MP3PRO at 96kps - 3.47MB

Quality is listed from top to bottom. Mp3pro sounds kind of weird, it isn't worth it to me even at 96 which is the highest the Nero encoder goes to. WMA sounds better with a little distortion with the cymbols, typical at this level, with some other artifacts. The HVBR file sounds exactly like the original.

IM me if you want one of these files.
