"He doesn't seem nerdy enough".

That was the quote from our HR Manager to my boss in a discussion about me. My boss just informed me. WTF is that supposed to mean? Does that mean she didn't think I was smart enough for my job? My boss seems to approve of my work. I asked him what she meant by it, but he said he didn't know.

Edit: dyslexia correction.

Work in IT ?

Yeah.

Change your clothes selection to include taped glasses and plaid. (sp?)

Yeah, I considered just wearing my glasses instead of the contacts, but would it help me get a raise?

wow... that's... hrmm...

doesn't your boss handle your raise? what did he seem to say about it other than "dunno." Did he sound like he thought the HR was on crack, or just kinda shoveled it to the side....

HR doesn't know jack sh!t about anything other than HR but just try telling them that. I have no love of HR, I've seen how the majority of people end up in the majors that feed into HR, it's mainly the people who couldn't cut it in Finance or Accounting or Management and instead ended up changing to Marketing or Communications because those majors don't require as much work or as much intelligence. Now, I don't mean to say that they are all that way because there are a good number of people who actually want to be in HR and are good at what they do, but the vast majority of people in HR just don't have a clue what's going on with anything outside of HR. They're good for preliminary screening and good for wading through resumes as long as the people who actually know the jobs for which people are being hired tell HR exactly what they need, but HR has zero business dealing with anything past the initial hire.

I believe that is some kind of discrimination. You have right to SUE for millions in damages and personal liabilities.

> HR is universally worthless
Amen to that

It means your HR managers sucks. Hard.
However, you should talk to your boss and make damn sure what that **** HR guy said will have no impact.

Our HR manager and my boss don't get along at all. Its been suggested that she doesn't like me by association with my boss. Who knows. I just don't know the reasoning for such a statement.

Maybe it's a compliment to the way you do look? Maybe this stupid HR person evisioned Nick Burns or some huge geek with a white shirt, a crooked tie, a pocket protector and taped up glasses. And then when this person saw you though, "Hmm, he doesn't seem nerdy enough to work in IS/IT....interesting" Perhaps it was just a passing comment, from my experiences HR talks out of their asses b/c they like to hear themselves talk and try to feel important.

In my experiences HR are the gatekeeper who are least qualified to match you with a position within the company.

"Wait a minute. You want 10 years experience in xxx, but xxx has only been out for 2 years."

To me it means that your boss doesn't have the sense to keep personal conversations to himself and your HR director doesn't have the sense to keep personal comments to herself. Now relax, unless there is a nerdy-seeming category on your performance evaluation.

I have seen that too often. Also, I HATE HR SPEAK!! Why does HR feel it has to soften everything, you don't mess up instead you have an opportunity for improvement. Your company isn't merging it's being assimilated (not even joking on this one) and if I have to go through one more reorg. I am going to go postal. Friggen wannabe cheerleaders.

Sounds like she is a stereotyping beeeyatch to me. Yeah, you were supposed to wear high water pants, a pocket protector and thick, black glasses with tape in the middle to represent the true figurehead of nerdom. In other other words she expected Eddie Deezen (The super nerd Melvin from the movie War Games minus the glasses).
