WTF? Dodge says Magnum wagon is a truck (for CAFE fuel reasons); Chrysler 300 gets all-wheel drive

NFS4: if you think that's whack, consider that many of the imports call themselves cars when it comes to import taxes, and trucks when it comes to emmissions. (CAFE is a bunch of BS anyways)

Don't they have to have a separate chassis, as opposed to UNI-body to count as a truck?

How long til we can raise our salaries again?

I still say emissions testing should be: check the body year, stick the sniffer up the tail pipe, run it through an RPM range, and call it good if it's good. Putting an EFI engine into a 1978 Jeep shouldn't require bringing it up to 20 year later emissions just to drive it on the street. It's already better than it was in 1978, let it go. The CAFE numbers should be consumer driven. If consumers want better gas milage, they'll ask for it like they did in the '70s and '80s (and we'll get a return of cars like the one C&D called a "shitbox")

if i remember correctly, a truck is defined by the base platform (chassis) it's built upon. The reason why PT Cruiser was also considered a truck.

Hmmmm... More evidence of a braindead classification. :p

For registration purposes, most SUVs are considered station wagons

CAFE is not a bunch of BS. Average fuel economy has increased by 10 mpg for passenger cars since it was implemented in 1975. How is that not a good thing? The problem is that there is a loophole for light trucks, and it needs to be closed. In 1975, the classes of cars were much more easily defined. There were cars, and there were trucks. They couldn't envision the current market with trucks being used as passenger vehicles only, and with all of these new crossover vehicles.

There was a consumer push for more fuel efficent cars that led to the continued increase in fuel efficency. When a consumer drive happens, the market usually moves like it's a trailer.

That is because all SUVs are just stationwagons on stilts. Or maybe Stationwagon Upon Vaults. The CAFE laws are so screwed up - they definately need overhauling. Unfortunately I don't see our current government doing that (this isn't a politics post, I'm talking about most politicians on both sides).

There some new photos at dodge.com.

I think the Magnum seems like an interesting concept and looks awesome. I always thought Chevy should have made a modern version of the 1955-57 Nomad, but it looks like Dodge beat them to it.

Automakers also consider minivans as trucks meaning that they don't have to meet stricter safety standards required for cars. Considering that minivans are often used for families, it shows the poor judgment of the automakers. :|

In fact, that deserves a second :|

The BS is, fuel economy should be, and is consumer driven. All regulations like this do is make government more corruptable, and they don't change anything that wouldn't have been changed by consumer demand.

The base platform for the PT Cruiser is a Neon and I don't think those are trucks.

I happened across a preview of the Magnum..

preview of 2005 Dodge Magnum

I don't know how accurate the article is but it sounds pretty sweet!

I always loved the 1955-57 Chevy Nomads and Pontiac Safaris. I'm really looking forward to test driving an R/T Magnum !
