So the movie isn't that great, but at 3:27, (see youtube comment) it appears a horse is tossed off the cliff...

wtf?

It looks like a dead/stuffed horse, and they probably reused the prop a few times. Each section of the cliff that the horse impacts has a lot of water there so they must have fished the prop out for retakes.

not the way the legs bend as it falls... it looks real... very real.

That does look pretty real. Maybe its just a good quality prop?

1966 (probably produced in 1964-65)...I'm guessing a real horse.

That's true, it is the USSR. I can see PETA's collective heads exploding a mile away.

I think it was definitely a real horse...but most likely a dead one as the video just shows a horse almost mid-way in falling...you dont see the horse being pushed towards the edge or anything...plus a horse wouldn't go off the cliff anyways unless it was stunned and couldn't help itself.

However, I do find it odd that not of the legs LOOKED broken when it hit the ground. It still looks to good to be a prop...

Edit: HOLY FUCKING SHIT IT IS A LIVING REAL HORSE! Look at its legs kicking and the horse obviously thinking "WTF!!!" at the very first millisecond you see it falling...definitely real, definitely alive, definitely fucked.

It must be real. There's no way a movie made without CGI could shoot something that looks sort of realistic with just a physical prop.

You'd have to put some time in it, but it could be realistically faked. Use some real horse parts over a synthetic skeleton, and it would have authentic movement.

Either I suck at teh Google search or else this scene has never been discussed before on an internet forum. The latter is impossible.

I dont think so cause right at the beginning you can see the horse trying to huff at the cliff wall, trying to catch itself.

My vote is that its definitely real. Alive then dead.

I'm not sure if this specific incidence is real, but there have been real horse(s?) killed in movies. One is from an old movie (30s-50s?) with an Indian (the feather kind) name, possibly Geronimo? I'm not motivated enough to find a link for it. Maybe Snopes or Wiki has it.

I figured the horse's movements that you see right when the fall starts were just the limbs catching on the cliff, because they completely stop moving after.

Yeah, I mean, this is the 60's. Im pretty sure, especially if shot outside the US, that it wouldn't be impossible or even implausible that a real horse got tossed. I mean, PETA didn't exist and I don't think "animal cruelty" laws and what not existed then.

Worse things have happened in movies before!

Perhaps, but all four of its legs continue to actively kick when completely in the air as well as its head moving from side to side.

I don't know, if it is fake, then its the most convincing fake Ive ever seen.

Edit: Just showed it to my bro before I even told him it was a movie and his first reaction was "OMG!"...he has a good eye for this kinda stuff just like I do and even he concurs with what I said above before I even said what I thought.

Double Edit: Seems from looking online that it may have been an old/ill horse that was soon to die anyways...makes sense to me honestly. If its going to die anyways why not video tape it?

Based on the number of horses on that narrow cliff, it could possibly have just fallen off by accident.

Wow, that did look real. If it was, I'm guessing the year it was made would have something to do with it because animal regulations seem to have come after that time.
