Wtf did iOS4 update kill my iPhone? HELP!

Backed it up with iTunes and left it to update overnight. Woke up, tried to power on the phone, and saw the iTunes logo. Connected to iTunes again and it said that the iPhone is in recovery mode and needs to be restored. Clicked restore and it gave me an error saying that it cannot be restored. Restarted the phone and went through all this again, and nothing. Fuck. Now what? I need my phone for work today, I`m so screwed... 🙁

4:38pm EST update: re-started for the 3rd time and tried to restore... finally working - about 75% complete. Hopefully it lets me restore my contacts, etc after!?

4:40pm: GOOODDD!! It was almost done and gave me the error again. Fuck fuck fuck. What do I do. Help.

Look up DFU mode. Put the phone in that mode and then try restoring the firmware again.

try using a different sync cable - make sure the phone is fully charged - CLOSE ALL OTHER APPS. I have this slow-az-poo p4-2.4ghz if anything else is open( trillian,outlook) anything - it will fail to backup/restore its so slow. might have something to do with the old 5400rpm pata drive lols.

keep trying! if its a 3G i'd go get a standard ipsw and dfu restore that.

dfu restore != restore mode

big difference.

It's darn near impossible to brick a phone these days.

take the sim card out if people are calling you.

Apple updates never fail to break shit. I freaking hate them (and don't update).

I've never had a problem with official updates, and the only problem I had was my own fault and jailbreak related... and that was easily remedied with a restore. I'm not a fan of Apple products in general, but they do succeed in making them pretty damned idiot proof. If you're having issues it's rarely the fault of the update.

Good to hear you got it working OP. As is usually the case with tech problems, it was something silly.

what i find is corrupted itunes causes more trouble than anything - and folks loading up a ton of extensions (JB) without carefully understanding the interaction and library (version) dependencies.

i've never ever ever had to reload/restore iphone 2g,3g,3gs,4 ipod touch 1,4; ipad wifi/3g - ever.

It's possible that mishandling,overheating, running out of juice (same as any other computer) can cause filesystem corruption leading to problems but dang i treat my phone like my pc - and have never seen this.

I believe you - it's possible a bad sector forms - apple has methods to avoid them but i guess i've been very lucky. and given the fact that my 2 (now 4) year old has always used, abused her iphone 2g - never had a problem.

where i see problems come up is the folks that sync their iphone alot - maybe they cancel sync's or unsafely unplug them or something (bad sync cable?) - the folks i've met that have had problems seem to sync alot. and we all know that itunes on PC is nowhere near as stable as itunes on osx. lol.
